Hate Literature Blitz Planned By Neo-Nazi Groups To Coincide With Jewish Holidays And 9/11
New York, NY, August 27, 2002 … In the wake of the death of its longtime leader, William Pierce, the neo-Nazi National Alliance has stepped up its anti-Semitic activities and is planning a nationwide distribution of hate literature to coincide with the start of the Jewish High Holidays and September 11.
According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the virulently anti-Semitic group has billed the mass distribution effort as the "Dr. William L. Pierce memorial international literature distribution week," in tribute to its deceased former leader. Pierce's death in July has spurred the National Alliance to stage a series of high-profile events in an effort to maintain the group's stature and profile, including a rally and hate music concert in Washington, D.C. last weekend that attracted nearly 500 supporters. Now the group is calling on supporters to print out and distribute fliers for one week, September 5 - 11. The Jewish High Holidays commence with Rosh Hashanah on the evening of Friday, September 6.
"William Pierce may be dead and gone, but his legacy of hate and anti-Semitism lives on," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "That is the message the successor leadership of the National Alliance wants to send to its cohorts and potential competitors. This is as much an effort to ensure the group's future viability as it is a means to slander Jews and Israel during one of the most religiously significant holidays of the year."
The National Alliance is not the only hate group calling on members to use the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks as an opportunity to spread racist and anti-Semitic messages. Among others, the Women for Aryan Unity have indicated they have similar plans for leafleting on the 9/11 anniversary.
In a bulletin to supporters posted on the Internet, the National Alliance urged members to print or download anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and racist fliers from a publicly accessible Web site and to distribute them in neighborhoods across the country. The fliers include anti-Semitic conspiracy theories such as "Jewish control" of the media and Hollywood, anti-Israel messages calling for an end to U.S. support for the Jewish State, and racist fliers suggesting that Jews and racial minorities are contributing to a decline of values in society. One of the fliers deals specifically with September 11, evoking images of the burning Twin Towers, and proclaiming: "Let's Stop Being Human Shields for Israel. Cut off Aid to Israel Now!"

It's no secret the Internet is a powerful tool, full of information. But there's a new warning about how some are using the medium and the messages they're sending.
The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has released a study about hate on the Web, which points to some disturbing trends.
The data on digital hate was collected and catalogued around the world. It was assembled in Canada, the worst of the Worldwide Web compiled on a disk that's only a mouse click away.

Several years ago, there was one hate site on line. That one hate site has now grown," says Abbee Corb of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. "We're seeing upwards of 3,300 hate sites on a global scale."
From white supremacists to suicide bombers, researchers at the centre found thousands of sites promoting age-old hatreds using the latest technology. No region seems to be free of it, certainly not North America, where U.S. groups promote violent uprisings and where a home-grown site claims to represent the Canadian ethnic cleansing team.
Similar digital hatred has been noticed before, but this year there were two clear trends.
First is groups gloating about the September 11 terrorist attacks. One site combines horrific photos with biblical justification. Other sites treat the attacks as a game, a sick joke. U.S. groups take the opportunity to blame immigrants. Middle Eastern groups actively use the Web to recruit new martyrs.
The second trend is sites promoting computer games where hate is the theme.
"The children play the games and, at the same time, they're inciting these young people to act out, perhaps to shoot a minority," says Corb. "You know: 'It's okay to shoot a minority… You're doing it in the game.'"
One particularly offensive game bills itself as the suicide bombing game. You're the bomber. Kill as many people as you can to score. Another game targets blacks.
Through the Internet, the games and the sites are easy to find. Standard search engines bring the content within the reach of hundreds of millions.
"The exposure that these sites have continues to escalate," says Michael Geist of the University of Ottawa.
So why doesn't someone, some government or some agency, do something? Geist, an Internet legal expert, says it's been an impossible task.

"There's no easy answer to that," he says. "In some instances they're not allowed to do it, but they do it anyway because policing activity on the internet is extremely complex and difficult."
Experts say writing and publicizing a report like this one has dangers of its own. Obscure groups and unknown sites could get much more attention than they would otherwise. But its authors say you have to shine a little light on even the darkest, slimiest corners of the web if they're ever to be cleaned out.

William Pierce, one of the world's most notorious racists, paid $250,000 to acquire Resistance Records and its Web site. This year (2001) he expects to do more than $1 million in business, much of it through Web orders.
...The latest trend in hate organizations is "leaderless resistance," in which haters are encouraged not to join groups but rather to become "lone wolves" and act alone. The rationale is that by joining a hate group, a hater becomes known to civil rights organizations. By promoting solo activism, hate groups also protect themselves from legal liability they faced in the past, as when Tom Metzger, leader of the White Aryan Resistance, was found guilty of inciting murder and jailed after three members of his group beat an Ethiopian student to death in Portland, Ore. By tracking these exchanges, and free-agent haters, Hatewatch could have provided useful insights into how organizations like the World Church of the Creator operate.
