Video of Taco Bell target action at the World Series game 5

by Otto Nomous
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers and anti-war activists showed up in kayaks at the McCovey Cove at PacBell Park during the game 5 of the 2002 World Series where Taco Bell had a floating target with a promise of a free taco for the entire country if a home run ball was to hit it. For those of you not able to view the video, here are some of the highlights:

First, you see a couple of kayakers paddle over to the Taco Bell's "Free Taco here" floating device with their own floating device that reads "No War for Oil. Go Giants".

Reactions from some Giants fans:
"What's it say?"
"No War for Oil..."
"Stupid, it's not for oil, dumbass." "See, if you had oil you can fuckin' get a motor behind that thing."

Next you see the SFPD patrol boat approach the "No War for Oil" float trying to get it out of there. Apparently all they could think of was to say that it was because a floating device needs a light on top of it. Never mind that neither Taco Bell's floating target nor the floating golf putting thing had lights on them...

Then you see other kayakers behind the Taco Bell target unfurl a banner that reads: "Taco Bell EXPLOITS farmworkers."

More reactions from Giants fans:
"(reads out while laughing) Taco Bell exploits farmworkers... (in a tone that suggests he finds it to be a ridiculous statement)"
"This is the fucking World Series, not a political platform!! Get the fuck out of here!!"

Then you see a boat full of drunkfratjockmeatheadbaseballfans nearby throwing water polo balls at the "Taco Bell EXPLOITS farmworkers" banner. Next you see two guys in a kayak wearing "Navy" shirts and signs paddle toward one of the activists with the "No war for oil" float and splash him with water.

Here are some other comments from the crowd that I heard that didn't end up on the video:
In response to the "No War for Oil" float: Several insults that end with "...you fucking commies!"
"That cell phone was made using oil! Ha! Asshole!"

Also, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers who were holding the "Taco Bell EXPLOITS farmworkers" banner reported being physically assualted which only increased with the level of alcohol the surrounding jocks consumed.

at 4:30am on talk radio they said that that taco hell thing sunk last night. why did it sink? then they just had some sound clips of jubilous fans who were really angry at police horses trotting around in the crowd trying to keep them in line.
by cp
I bet the giant win will the series and then they will throw a big drunken celebration with most of the city behind them, so even tho those people described are boors, it would probably be better to angle it like the united giants fans popped the taco bell thing (which is sort of true - I bet most san francisco residents in fact do dislike that place quite a bit. this is the gourmet capital), and that all the city is with you behind whatever next point is made nearby to the stadium. the examiner actually had a good article about the sfbc bicycle valet parking at the game, and the anaheim people were making obnoxious comments about needing suvs or looking on in confusion, but the SF people they interviewed made us look good.

"This is the fucking World Series, not a political platform!! Get the fuck out of here!!"

That pretty much sums it up. There's a time and place for everything and people going to a game don't want to be bombarded with political anything. That's one reason they go to a game, to forget about work, politics and other stuff and just relax with family or buddies and enjoy a game. I don't even appreciate these politicians who hire planes to fly banners that say "Vote For Me". I'm at the game. Let me enjoy the little time I do have to just relax and think about nothing but having fun.

The Giants should go, out of San Francisco, and take their favorite fascist election-frauding, gambling racket thug, Willie Brown, with them. Professional baseball is a stinking gambling racket; there is no other reason for this stupid war game's existence. No one with a brain sits there just to watch grown men bat a ball around a field; they are betting on the outcome of the game, while they are getting stinking drunk.

Not only should the Giants go, so should the 49ers, another election-frauding, gambling racket gang, friends of that election-frauding, anti-workingclass, gambling racket thug, Willie Brown. For their election fraud of June 3, 1997, in which we voted 70% against the 49er Stadium Swindle, and Willie Brown's and the 49ers' election fraud gang changed it to 50.2% "yes," see http://www.brasscheck.com/stadium

The election-fraud gang of San Francisco consists of Willie Brown, the 49ers, Glide Church, Nation of Islam, A. Phillip Randolph Institute, the Housing Authority, Walden House, TURF, the Chamber of Commerce, the Democratic Central Committee, the Republican Central Committee, and all their fascist supporters.

Far more money is made in San Francisco from the arts. People not only spend their money on all the cultural venues and events, they combine culture with dining in San Francisco's wide variety of excellent restaurants and if they come from more than 50 miles away, they stay in our hotels.

We will see the artistic community in full force at our peace march on October 26 as peace and culture are mutually beneficial. To be human is to have culture; language is a form of culture and we all have a language.

War destroys culture and destroys humanity. War exists to maximize profits for the capitalist class, and professional baseball and football also exist to maximize the profits of the wealthy owners of these businesses, and that is all professional baseball and football are: Profit-making businesses.

See you all at the peace march on October 26, 2002.
by dont let the yuppies ruin this for you
The game was expensive so most ordinary San Franciscans watched it on TV. Just because the few rich Newsom supporting sports fans were the only ones who could afford to get in (or aford to pay for boats in the cove), you shouldnt let that bias your opinion about all sports fans.

Id bet you that most Giants fans oppose the war. If nationwide support for Bush war was only at 66%(the number goes way down or slightly up depending on international support) a few weeks ago, Im guessing the Bay Area has lower than 30% support. That means MOST Giants fans OPPOSE the war.

In MANY poorer countries sports games are also political rallies (mainly because stadium are one of the few places that many people can legally get together).

One things for sure, if any of the rich rightwing sports fans took the antiTaco Bell action as an excuse to run to taco bell and buy some food, they are going to be running to the bathroom all day today. Besides being made with exploited labour, that stuff is nasty.

Unfortunately, I cant see any mainstream coverage of this event on any news web sites so Im guessing only the small group outside of the game even knew there was a protest. Most Gaints fans are antiWar proUnion and proud of it. Dont let a few Newsom drones spoil your enjoyment of the Giants winning the Series.

Oh, like after that display of disgusting violence, chauvinism and war fever you expect me to believe that those people ever think about politics?

I think they live in a fascist culture of perpetual forgetting.

And those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Most Giants fans are ordinary SF residents and MOST oppose the war. Yeah you cant expect to reason with drunk yuppie Newsom supporting frat guys but.... they are a small minority

"If you think you can win the hearts and minds of the working class by bad mouthing sports, you're a clueless fool."

Thanx nessie. We can agree on some stuff.

"disgusted", whoever the hell you are, some people like sports. If you don't, then don't watch or participate. But making political every damn little thing people do in their everyday walks of life is old hat and boring as hell. People watching the 49ers or the Raiders or the Giants or the A's or Stanford or Cal or local high schools enjoy the game. The players enjoy playing the game. It's fun! Ever heard of FUN?? Nobody's sitting there thinking "Oh, nice double by Bonds. Shit, can you believe that Willie Brown?" Try getting away from politics 24/7/365/forever. There's a whole world out there of things to do other than politics.
by cp
yes, it's like, 70 years ago people envisioned the year 2000 as this time when machines did all the work, and we would all kick back - spending our time on sports, arts, relaxation. Somehow it didn't work out that way and we're working just as many hours per week- does anyone have a guess why?

Anyway, the slight problem with the 'there's a time and a place" argument regarding people protesting the Taco Bell floating object is --- what about all the fucking advertising coating the PAC BeLL stadium? Shouldn't there be a time and place for that too.. or is it so pervasive and accepted that you don't even notice that taco bell and the taco bell protesters are both engaging in the same activity towards a 'captive' audience. It's not like the tickets are made cheaper by the presence of this advertising - the ads are mainly for the TV stations anyway, and it's not like TV is improved so much by the ads. There are other countries that have equally good or better TV without ads.
not to mention that even though the taxpayers, including reclusive art museum attending non baseball fans, had to purchase all these stadiums, and instead of naming it for them, they name it after Pac Bell (and other corporations for other stadiums) for a nominal fee. And it's like, Pacbell sucks - it's totally false advertising. When I tried to install my phone line, I had to get them to come out three times because they kept activating a wire for someone else in the building, and then they charged me $80 for something they didn't do, and when you call in to complain you just get a robot, then it took me three months to get the money back through sheer persistence. Then a few times the line just went dead or got interchanged with someone's in the next block, so I had to get the long distance shut off because of that. ... and pretty much everyone I talk to has a story like this, like with regards to their charging for dsl lines when they hadn't provided a dsl line and stuff. most recently I called to complain about their silently adding services I didn't ask for, and they have these opprssed call center people who don't know anything, and absolutely couldn't tell me why they had added the services despite my asking them several times because they are only permitted to read scripts off of a computer screen, then at the end of the call they have to ask the caller "please rate my services during this phone call from 1-5" but you can't just insult the person to their face. Did you know that 3% of the public works at call centers these days? Anyway, why is no one equally unhappy about the advertising at the stadium that you didn't ask for - it's because it's not as novel as people questioning it.

Just recently the board of Supervisors unanimous passed a measure showing their support of the Giants and praising players like Barry Bonds, Benito Santiago, and Manger Dusty Baker. I guess since Matt Gonzalez and Chris Daly supports the Giants too, they are Pro-War Right Wing Nazis now.

My guess is those who are critical of the Giants and the people who attend games never been to game before and likes to stereotype. Just like the San Francisco, the people who attend games are equally diverse. There are those who are so set in their politics views that if you don’t think exactly like they do, you’re a fascist. Take a look in the mirror and you will see who the true fascists are.

Go Giants, 1 MORE WIN!!!

"Also, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers who were holding the "Taco Bell EXPLOITS farmworkers" banner reported being physically assualted which only increased with the level of alcohol the surrounding jocks consumed." Why is it that when you fucking idiots make asses of yourselves in public, it's a great big assault on your 'rights' when people react negatively? Here's a news flash, most people in this country, including the bay area, don't care what Taco Bell is doing to it's workers. If you don't like working for Taco Bell, quit. Find a new job. This isn't Cuba you know. The meaining of the word choice applies to more than just abortion.
by B-Ball
cp, first of all, sorry to hear about your phone troubles. Hope it gets worked out.

As far as the ads, people have accepted it, just like they've accepted beer comercials on TV during sports. There's a big difference to me between ads and politics or even religion for that matter. I go to a game, I go there to have fun. The ads and stuff almost become background noise in reality. But I don't want to think about politics and I don't want some preacher or some Hara Krishna coming up to me and bugging me. Now just set everything else aside for a moment and think about it. Is that really that hard to understand that people go to get away from the hussle and bussle of everyday life?

There are people on here that I disagree with vehementely on political issues. But I guarantee you we could go to a game and have a hotdog and a drink and have a good time just watching the game and shooting the breeze talking about sports or the weather or travel or whatever. I think you know what I'm saying.

As one of the activists holding the "EXPLOITS " sign in the video, I'd like to add my perspective.

I love baseball, and even though I am an As fan (East Bay Til I Die), I have been rooting for the Giants in the Series. The action last night in McCovey Cove was necessary for this reason: the Coalition of Immokalee Workers does not have millions of advertising dollars to publicize the plight of the migrant laborers on national television. Taco Bell does have millions and the "Free Taco Here" sign was essentially free advertising - although I am sure TB paid something to Major League Baseball and Fox tv. Getting our sign on national television with relatively little effort (a few kayaks, a sign) was the goal. Our sign was broadcast during the game by FOX. Mission accomplished.

They say baseball is as American as apple pie. As for the experience of having several dozen drunken fans physically and verbally assault you for exercising your free speech rights - we'll let you draw your own conclusions. I was hit with paddles, sausages, pistachios, water polo balls and had to "physically deter" (euphemism for your personal flavor of canned whoop-ass) several individuals from sinking my inflatable kayak. Admirably, the police did step in to prevent it from getting any crazier. And interestingly, the nicest person there was one of the Taco Bell kayakers hired to protect the Free Taco target. He stated that he had not yet been paid, otherwise he would have been right there with us in our protest.

All in all it was a great time to be on the water.

damn, this is a great story. i wish this action was more prominant on this website. lately the main stories on indymedia are the stuff everyone already knows about, like the 26th march.

That's cool that their were activists there to bring attention to the plight of the workers. Good job. And as for anyone who is anti-sport, some of that sentiment is valid. It's competitive and fierce. That's why I don't like football that much. I'm a baseball fan. But any criticism of people who like sports or fans is downright elitism. You better check yourself. Most working people are sports fans. The working class is on our side.
By the way, I hate the Giants. And a lot of their fans are yuppie bastards. It's a direct result of the corporatization of the team and dotcom boom, etc. I'm an A's fan till I die, baby.
by Sports Fan
It’s seems like Coalition of Immokalee Workers is getting a lot of backlash for their inappropriate timing on political activism and to curb this backlash they needed to write an explanation letter for their actions and qualify it by stating their “love” for baseball.

If you truly loved baseball and appreciated it, then you would have known this was not the proper venue for your demonstration. But for some reason, there is this need in SF to politicize everything, even those items that should remain neutral.
by Peter Luce (pluce [at] sbcglobal.net)
My post was not intended to "apologize" for the timing of the action. Nor was it intended to temper any backlash by professing a love of baseball. It is perfectly reasonable to be both a baseball fan and an activist.

The place and timing of the protest could not have been more appropriate.
by Sports Fan
Yes you can be fan and activist. But there is a time and place for everything. This was a time to be a fan. Instead you felt it was necessary to politicize an event that should have remained politically free.

As to your letter, you did write it to curb backlash of sports fans who were offended by the timing of your activism otherwise you wouldn’t have opened “I love baseball…” in an attempt to qualify your actions and appeal to them.
by votemarch sf
The action protesting Taco Bell was precisely as appropriate for the time and place as the action promoting Taco Bell -- namely the placing of that target in McCovey Cove. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander -- as Taco Bell was there to get attention from baseball fans for their products that have nothing to do with baseball, so were the protesters there for something that had nothing to do with baseball but very much to do with Taco Bell.
by Peter Luce (pluce [at] sbcglobal.net)
There is quite a long and storied tradition of political protest at sporting events - a few that come to mind are the Black Power salutes at the '68 Olympics and...hmmmm, the quite frequent player strikes in professional baseball over the last twenty years. Tell the Major League Baseball Players Union that they have no right to organize against the team owners and I am sure they would have something vigorous to say in response.
Perhaps you feel that Taco Bell and farmworkers is irrelevant to baseball. I ask, what relevance does free tacos have to baseball? Or credit card companies urging viewers to vote for memorable moments? Or any other promotion? There is no relevance, but most people don't seem to notice or mind that our entire lives are saturated with commercial messages. Subversion of commercial advertising is a quite effective way at getting our message across.
not to nitpick or anything, but that last time i checked on the definition of "politicize" and "political" it seemed to deal with things of a governmental nature. how does holding up a sign stating a fact about taco bell's particular means of dealing with their employees constitute politicizing a baseball game? ok, that IS nitpicking, but someone had to do it.

it's easy enough to ignore advertising that pervades our existence, but you can't ignore a sign that says taco bell exploits their workers? is that because a sign stating such might actually cause you to think? might cause you to realize that outside of your little warm cocoon life isn't all that pretty? frankly the advertising should be just as disturbing, but we've grown tired, bored, conditioned to its existence. sadly activism and protest and debate now seem out of place, definitely out of fashion, and fear-inspiring. i hope that changes, i really do. preferably before it's too late....

in other words, wake the F up. as a member of this vaunted United States of America it is my, hell OUR, DUTY to exercise our rights to free speech. to sit back and let abuses continue is unpatriotic. not to mention pathetic. likewise, you have right to protest against my protest, but it does not give you a right to do violence against me.

whatever. i prefer the taco truck at fruitvale bart anyway. f*ck taco hell. east bay all the way!

oh and of course i'm rooting for the Angels. go anaheim. (down with disney though, and whose idea was that stupid monkey anyway?)

"Are you refering to the military fly over? What a beautiful display of our military's might. "

it sure was! damn beautiful! hey.... where were they last september 11?

In response to the comment..."If you truly loved baseball and appreciated it, then you would have known this was not the proper venue for your demonstration. But for some reason, there is this need in SF to politicize everything, even those items that should remain neutral."

Is there really a separation between those who truly love baseball and those who do things like speak out against injustice? This was not an act against baseball. Duh. It was a direct statement of truth about the business practices of Taco Bell/Pepsi.

The reason San Franciscans (and by the way, I know one of the participants in this action and she lives in the East Bay, not San Francisco) and people in the Bay Area in general "need" to "politicize" and speak out about things like this is because they exist.

Do NOT blame or bash the people who demonstrate against injustice. They are not the problem.

The problem is people who think that money rules and people, their lives and livelihoods, and our planet don't matter. These are the people who are the problem for us all. The destuctive actions of these people effect us all in VERY negative ways.

People who speak up about things like this (who are from San Fran or wherever) should be commended.
They are the few who are BRAVE ENOUGH to speak up when things are going BLATENTLY WRONG!!!!

People who do not "blow the whistle" and don't have enough balls to stand up for common good are part of the problem as well. They of course are not as easy to notice cuz they are just quitely minding their own business, denying that these negative things are happening, and hoping they'll just simply disappear and/or that someone else will take care of it.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

The "rules" of war have changed. No one is immune to the death and destruction that a war (for oil) can bring on.

Where were you since Sept 11th? Don't you get it??

These problems will not go away on their own and they certainly cannot be addressed if no one is aware of them.

by Sports Fan
None of you would have a problem with the concept of Bush 2 using the World Series as a platform to delivery a Pro-War Speech or Governor Gray Davis fund raising at the World Series or NRA members holding signs in the crowd regarding Gun Rights?

Or would you be offended that they decided to use that moment for their own political gain? It doesn't matter if it comes from the right or the left, there is a time and place for everything.
We are not sure where all the confusion comes from, but , for the record, we will say this: the CIW banner drop last night at the stadium was NOT about baseball, or about sports, or any of the other surprisingly off-point commentaries in this discussion, it was about Taco Bell, and it took place in the water outside of the stadium only because that is where Taco Bell put its money-grubbing little float in the first place.

If Taco Bell had put its float outside of the Republican National Convention, and got minutes of free advertising before 11 million eyes for putting it there, we'd have put our banner there, too. If they had put it next to the center table at the World Chess Championships, we'd have been there, too (as long as we had a boycott committe nearby...).

The point is, if you are upset about some perceived disrespect of sports, or the politicization of sports, or the commercialization of sports, wake up and complain to the fine folks at the Taco Bell web site, because they -- and all the other countless corporations that have plastered their logos on stadium walls, uniforms, balls, cars, and on the insides of minds across the country -- are a million times more guilty of misusing sports to get their own (political, whether you think so or not...) message across than the farmworkers who brought you last night's banner drop.

Just because the never-ending flood of corporate logos has become "background noise" in every single sporting event we watch on TV today does not mean that our minds ignore their messages. On the contrary, advertising is quite often most effective when it doesn't break into our immediate awareness. So though the banner drop last night might have caused a little glitch in the Matrix for some of you, you should take advantage of the opportunity provided by the brief moment of consciousness to think about the ubiquity of advertising instead of browbeating the courageous people who took their time to throw a monkeywrench in the machine.

And one other thing, as far as I understand, the defenders of the Taco Bell's right to free speech in the cove were not so much motivated by brand loyalty, or corporate homeland security, or even by alcohol, but by the fact that the "Taco Bell Exploits Farmworkers" sign was blocking their 2-3 seconds of facetime on TV.

And for the record, I personally don't have a favorite baseball team (though I sort of liked the Orioles during the Eddie Murray years), I like the Washington Bullets (oops.. Wizards), and the Dallas Cowboys -- the Montana to Clark touchdown still hurts, by the way... Soccer, though, is definitely the sport of choice of CIW members everywhere.
by .........
I dunno, I think they already do. Whenever the "Fox Sports" thing comes up there are aircraft carriers and shit in the background ... that's got nothing to do with sports, that is purely political. And it happens every single broadcast, but I don't hear a word of criticism about it. Why are you so upset, then, when the politics comes from the other side for a change?

Q #1: What y'all think of Muhammad Ali publicly condemning US involvement in Viet Nam, refusing army induction on religious grounds, and being stripped of his title and being sentenced to five years in prison (later reversed). Is he an asshole, too? Or are only celebrities in the spotlight allowed to act up?

Q #2: Do you think any individual in the TV audience saw that Taco Bell protest sign and wondered about it enough to do an internet search on it?

Q #3: Do y'all get as upset when you see that cheap opportunist called the Rainbow Man hold up his "John 3:16" sign without the cops beating the shit out of him?

Q #4: Did those few seconds of poltical protest ruin the entire World Series for you?

Q #5: Do you get all dewy-eyed when you hear the name "Pac Bell Park," knowing full well it's named after the dang phone company?

If you answered "yes" to two or more of the above questions, then maybe this activist web site isn't for you. Nothing personal, but there are plenty of sports talk radio shows on the AM dial. Go Giants!

Where were the military jets on September 11, 2001? They most certainly were NOT doing their duty.
how is these activists using it as a platform to get the ideas out there any different than corporations using it to get the products out there?

>>> But making political every damn little thing people do in their everyday walks of life is old hat and boring as hell. <<<

Hallelujah! The best way to influence people, like it or not, is through entertainment:

For better or worse, "The China Syndrome" did more to turn people against nuclear power than all the screaming protestors.

More people re-think their position on gays from an episode of Will and Grace than from someone screaming into a microphone at a rally.

Being constantly adversarial does nothing but make people angry and turn them against your cause, rather than make them for it.

It is pretty ignorant to think that protesting should be done quietly, privately, and with as little disruption as possible! Protesting is how this damn country was formed! You people learned, or should of learned in Elementary school, that we were under British rule until our founding fathers and many other citizens rebelled against how they were treated and why they couldn't be free and out of that, came our Declaration of Independence. That is why we are free! because people saw injustice and refused to sit on their ass, like so many US people do today, they decided to protest and fight for what was right, and they won. Where there is injustice, people should be protesting at public events, on TV, radio, anywhere that others can see and hear them, even if others might disagree. I was at the DC rally last saturday where over 150,000 people stood up for peace and justice, it was inspiring and patriotic! The real Patriots are the people who try to make our country a better place, and don't just sit around doing nothing, thinking the US is in great shape, when they know it isn't. Workers being exploited? Protest! A war where our boys will be sent to die for OIL and kill innocent Iraqis? PROTEST!!!!!! And that is what these admirable people did, they should be commended!!! Thank you for standing up, and being creative about it! What a great idea! Got a kick out of it! Peace

Peace

Sorry, my computer got messed up on me, so I accidently hit the post button too many times, my bad
by Doug B.
It seems unusual to me that people deem the presence of protest at a sporting event inappropriate, but don't even give a second glance to the ubiquitous presence of advertising at a sporting event. If a sporting event is indeed a place to forget about everything else that's going on in the world, I would think these people would be furious about their inability to go to a sporting even without being advertised at (be it the high budget advertising of Taco Bell/Coke/.... or the low budget advertising of protestors).
