Subject: [narconews] Issue #29: Gary Webb joins Narco News as Guest Editor

March 3, 2003
Please Distribute Widely

Dear Colleagues,

Issue #29 of Narco News today begins with a surprise announcement...

Starting today, I am taking a sabbatical from the helm of Narco News and our
new editor is Pulitzer prize winning Authentic Journalist Gary Webb.

Webb, the author of "Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras and the Crack
Cocaine Explosion," will work closely together with our Andean Bureau Chief
Luis Gomez and our team of 50 students and professors from 10 countries of
the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism to bring you the news about
the drug war and democracy from Latin America.

Today's issue begins with...

- My report on the ten-day School of Authentic Journalism and the successful
recruitment of Webb, one of our professors, to take the steering wheel here.
From now until April 15, Webb and Gomez have total editorial control. I'm
not even going to be on email.

- A report by Authentic Journalism Scholar George Sanchez, of the Center for
Investigative Reporting in San Francisco, about his faculty advisor, the
same Gary Webb

- A report by Authentic Journalism Scholar Alex Contreras, of Cochabamba,
Bolivia, on the road, now, into the future from the J-School.

- An all new Spanish language archives page

- An all new Portuguese language archives page

- Our Opening Statement of April 18, 2000, now in Portuguese

And me? I'm off to look for América...

Six years ago, after almost a decade in the Commercial Media, I left the
offices, the computer screens, the Internet, all of it, and headed to the
mountains of the Mexican Southeast where I learned Spanish and a new way to
fight. To find the real news in this world one has to get away from the
Media and its technologies of domination, and go where the people who don't
have computers, who can't buy advertising, live and work. It was the best
decision I ever made and everything that came after it, including Narco
News, began there, away from the Screen.

What is very clear to me - and I write about this in my report today - is
that the objective conditions now exist for the revolution against
Commercial Media Tyranny. It is rising from every corner of our América,
including the awakened giant named Brazil, where mastery of Spanish and
English is not enough, where the language spoken is Portuguese. Caros
Leitores, I must go learn that language now to do my part in making
Bolivar's dream of a united América more possible.

Last Christmas Day, many of you decided to help us hire a new drug policy
reporter. So I went straight to the best: Gary Webb, the Comeback Kid of
Authentic Journalism. (Thanks, Kind Readers: Gary works for you now!)

The forces of simulation and dishonesty tried to drum Gary out of journalism
for the crime of having told the truth about US government complicity in the
drug trade. Well, they gambled wrong. Gary Webb is back. He is here in the
Newsroom. The renaissance of Authentic Journalism can no longer be denied.

Here are your new contact emails for Narco News...

Guest Editor Gary Webb: garywebb@attbi.com
Andean Bureau Chief Luis Gomez: luisgomez@narconews.com
Webmaster Dan Feder: webmaster@narconews.com
Letters to the Editor: letters@narconews.com

So, please read my report. I say a lot there. It is the last you will be
hearing from me for a while.

But you and Narco News are in the best of hands with Gary, Luis, and the
other members of this expanding intercontinental ballistic trilingual
newspaper. Please give Gary and Luis every kind of help and assistance you
have always given me. I won't be on email. Anything I can do for you, they
can do for you.

Check out the revamped Narco News site, and learn more about this historic
voyage of Authentic Journalism that begins today:
