TreeSit Goes Up Late Tuesday After City Wounds In Lawrence Kansas

by Breathe Deep (aum [at] crazygrandpa.com)
2000 year old elm tree is hacked to pieces but still standing, on a lot in Lawrence Kansas by the local chain of Borders corporation.
The company wants to turn the little over an are plot into a parking lot to remedy the problems of the weekly filling of the lots as a product of the nightlife in Lawrence.
As a result Cicha (activist) in direct action ascended the elm late last night and plans to stay until the corporation and the city decides to turn reserve their plans for a parking lot and allow the city to keep the land as a park.
For the past decade there has been
protests concerning this tree.Graffitti sains the asphaoult leading into the samll parking lot of a corporate bookchain...commenting on the opposition of the loss of this great elm tree. Early tues.morning without warning saws turned up and began to hack at and defile a well loved and cherished natural monument to Lawrences love affair with nature.

Local Activist Cicha climbed her tuesday night with hope to make a stance against insensitive opinions about the tree being a safety hazard, and to turn the lot into a memoral peace park.
"We need peace right now in the world not destruction"she said as she was situating her new home 30 feet up in the wounded peace symbol created by the damage.
It only became a hazard after they built a third entrance to the borders parking lot 10 feet away from the trees base. Despite their resolutionof 30 feet in the original concensus so the north west side could survive the feeder roots unharmed to soak up
precious sunlight. They began to soak up an excessive amount of exhaust fumes and asphault toxins that spread throughout the soil.
There were even rumours of the tree developing dutch elm disease, only to later be tested and the results came up negative. Confirming the trees stunt in health is due to the road over its roots.
The city is named tree city U.S. by parks and recreation and is usually responsible about helping trees thrive, as this sensless act is definatly not a positive representation of a caring Tree City.

Thanks to Borders and afew heartless city employees.
We have not lost her, and we do not plan to.

Local residents have already expressed how they would like the lot to remain un scathed and to possibly beturned into a park or memorial.
The corporation and the city have opposition already deciding to turn this area into a lot, and it seems as though they have not encountered this sort of action, due to the lack of anyone coming out from the tree trimming company today to decide to come to a resolution.

The tree was over 100 feet tall now Cicha sits in her perch high off of the ground in the drizzle. Awaiting the city of Lawrence and Borders to come to a compromise. Several other activists have become ground support over night and the community has lent warm loving support so far.
Channel 6 news is going to have more coverage on this action tonight and online.
