Stanford Univ. Protest: Peruvian Imprisonment of Lori Berenson, Human Rights Activist
Peru's president, Alejandro Toledo, is scheduled to present at the Stanford graduation ceremonies this weekend. Over 100 Stanford professors have signed a petition to be presented to Toledo, a Stanford alumn, regarding the unfair trial of Lori Berenson. Lori Berenson's father was interviewed on KPFA's Morning Show yesterday - mp3 attached. Runtime: 9:22

I don't know of a specific website with more information on this specific protest, but you can look at the Free Lori site for background information: http://www.freelori.org/ A phone number for the Stanford action is noted in the radio broadcast, at the end.
Lori Berenson is a US citizen currently being held as a political prisoner in Peru. After serving nearly five years in harsh jails, her conviction of treason against Perú and her life sentence were overturned. In June 2001 she was cleared of charges of being a terrorist, but convicted of collaboration, and sentenced to twenty years in prison by a civilian terrorism court which, according to the U.S. State Department, "fails to meet international standards of openness, fairness, and due process."

Lori was a rich American tourist who came to Peru looking for adventure. She assisted radicals who have murdered thousands of Peruvian workers. She was tried and imprisoned. A Peruvian who comes to America and aids the killers of Americans would be on death row. You should respect the people of Peru and not try to influence our judicial or electoral systems. Lori was no different than Rumsfeld or Wolfowitz.
The people of Peru did not imprison her. The government did. The government does not speak for the people. The government speaks for the ruling class.
