EMERGENCY RESPONSE DEMONSTRATION

HAITI SOLIDARITY

Monday, March 1, 2004

Powell & Market, SF, 5 p.m.

(adjacent to Powell Street BART)

Dear Friends,

This is horrible day for
Haiti and a shameful day in the history of the United States. The forced ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide culminates a U.S.-led destabilization campaign to undermine and sabotage Haitiís democratically elected government. As the violence spreads in Haiti, our government has blood on its hands.

While the corporate media talks about President Aristideís ìresignationî, it is clear that the United States gave the ultimatum and pulled the trigger.

According to sources
within Haiti, United States Special Forces went to
President Aristide's house, took him to the Palace and presented him with a resignation to sign. They made it quite clear that, without his resignation, there would be no international assistance to defend Haiti against the heavily armed commandos who have terrorized Haiti for weeks. We have heard from at least two sources that he refused to sign. President Aristide was later taken to the airport and put on a plane out of the country. He made no public statement and has not been in contact with anyone since. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Protest the US-engineered violent coup against the democratically-elected government of Haiti

Solidarity Demo Monday March 1st, 5pm leaving from Powell and Market in San Francisco

Send letters of Shame to the perpetrators of the coup in Haiti and its supporters in the international community. This includes Kofi Annan at the UN who did not act when international support was truly needed and , of course, the U.S. State Department's Colin Powell who has hypocritically undermined and overthrown a democratically elected government in Haiti. I have not bothered to include contact info for the Whitehouse. The level of arrogance and distain for public opinion is so great there that you would be wasting your time.

Aristide's militias have been firing on peaceful protesters. Maybe we can learn something from Aristide. Now that he doesn't have anything to do maybe he could become mayor of San Francisco. I can guarantee you Republican support.

I'm serious let's start a bipartison attempt to make Aristide mayor of San Francisco. He is a former Catholic Priest which a penchant for hard ass repression of anyone he doesn't agree with - sounds kinda Republican to me. He loves free enterprise (to the point of completely getting rid of the law). He is well connected with high power drug dealers in Columbia which should make him a poster boy for the hemp movement. Despite Haiti containing 20% of the import trade of hard drugs into the US his government did not make a single arrest last year.

He is even a minority so it doesn't get any more progressive than that. In essence he is a progressive Republican. Anyone with me? Come on now. I am 100% serious. Let's get this guy in office.
