Marriage Equality California and Equality California Commend U.S.
Senator Barbara Boxer for Endorsing full Equality for Same-Sex Couples
Equality California (EQCA) and Marriage Equality California (MECA)
commend U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer for rescinding recent remarks made to
the San Francisco Chronicle about the adequacy of Domestic Partnership
benefits as a substitute for marriage equality for same-sex couples and
re-affirming her unequivocal public support of full equality for
same-sex couples in a written statement provided to the Harvey Milk
Democratic Club:
"I support full equality for all couples, regardless of the
gender of the individuals...I understand that current California law
does not
provide the full equality. I initially thought it did."
"We are pleased to know that Senator Boxer supports full equality for
same-sex couples and appreciate her willingness to meet with her LGBT
constituents and move her position after being educated about why
domestic partnerships do not and cannot provide full equality, " said
Geoffrey Kors, Executive Director of EQCA. "This important
clarification demonstrates not only Senator Boxer's support of equality
for members of the LGBT community, but also the importance of LGBT
voters in the November election who are making it clear that they will
not support candidates who do not support full equality for us and our
families."
"Although Senator Boxer's statement does not explicitly endorse civil
marriage for same-sex couples, we assume that 'full equality' means she
is supporting the right to marry, as anything less than this position
would not be 'full equality,'" said Molly McKay, Executive Director of
MECA. "We will be seeking to confirm our assumption with her office in
future conversations."
