Likud votes down Gaza withdrawal

by bbc
Exit polls in Israel indicate that the governing Likud party has rejected Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to pull out from the Gaza strip.
The result came at the end of another day of violence.

A pregnant Jewish woman and her four daughters were killed by gunmen who ambushed their car in Gaza.

Israeli helicopters then retaliated by firing missiles at a 12-storey building in Gaza City housing a radio station linked to the militant Hamas group.

Mr Sharon told Israeli radio the killing of the mother, with her children aged 11, nine, seven and two was a "terrible assassination" intended to "delay and disrupt" his disengagement plan.

An army spokesman said the family's car was ambushed on the road between Gaza and Gush Katif, to the south.

Both gunmen are said to have been killed following the attack.

The air strike on Gaza City caused the top corner of the targeted building - filled with apartments and businesses - to collapse.

A radio station linked to Yasser Arafat's Fatah organisation was also located there.

Later on Sunday evening, a car exploded in the West Bank town of Nablus. It is unclear what caused the explosion, but at least two people are reported dead in the blast.

Bumper sticker

A Palestinian militant alliance - between Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees - claimed responsibility for the attack on the woman and children, Reuters news agency reported.

The woman was opposed to the Gaza pullout plan. A bumper sticker on her car said: "From here, we will not move."

The shooting is said to have taken place on a stretch - known as the Kissufim road - that links the settlements in the southern Gaza Strip with Israel proper.

The road has been the scene of many attacks of this kind since the current Palestinian uprising began.

An Israeli Army spokesman told AFP news agency: "A cell of probably two terrorists positioned themselves near the Kissufim Road that leads to the Gush Katif bloc."

An explosive device was detonated against an army post just after the attack, "probably to postpone the arrival of soldiers at the scene", he said.

Sharon plea

The attack took place near one of the settlements which would be affected by Ariel Sharon's plan for Israeli troops and settlers to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.

The prime minister made a last-minute appeal to Likud Party members to support it, saying withdrawal would enable Israel to make progress, including increasing its security, rather than moving backwards.

The proposal calls for Israeli troops and 7,500 Jewish settlers to leave the Gaza Strip.
