YAY! Thanks especially for print coverage of the national End Corporate Rule movement and Berkeley's new resolution in the excellent article by Liam O'Donoghue. As expected, the corporate print media largely ignored this small but important step. One noteable exception from The Providence (RI) Journal:

"Not a 'natural person' " Tuesday, July 6, 2004
"To say that as Berkeley, Calif., goes, so goes the
nation would be a gross misstatement. But every now
and then, this San Francisco Bay Area bastion of
leftist politics does something that the rest of the
nation should pay attention to. Such an occasion took
place recently, when the Berkeley City Council passed
a resolution in support of amending the U.S. and
California constitutions "to declare that corporations
are not granted the protections or rights of persons."
"...The Berkeley resolution notes that " 'corporation' is
not mentioned in the U.S. Constitution; our founders
did not grant corporations rights; rights were
reserved for natural people; historically corporations
were created as artificial entities, chartered by
state governments to serve the public interest, cause
no harm, and be subordinate to the sovereign people;
and yet by judicial interpretations, corporations
gained personhood status, free speech and other
protections guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the
14th Amendment."
"Since large corporations have such vast economic and
political power, which they can use for much social
good and ill, it makes sense to examine some of the
legal doctrines that have led to their power...."
