SF's undressed Night Marsh, etc.

by Liberty (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
Nude dancers embody joy, timidity, love, fear, playfulness, disability, more....

Gonzo notes instead of a review, about watching Night Marsh/the Undressed Project by Dandelion Dancetheater, at Jon Sims Center for the Arts, SF, 9 July 2004:

This queer elder nudist sits clothed in the very front row, feeling corpse-like amongst an audience of the mainly beautiful and mostly young, almost all of whom look like dancers themselves. Fit thinnies who seem to live on bottled water.

Opening satire, ILLUSIVE, lets chubby naked Eric dance until a clothed lecturer interrupts to explain why he can't be a "real" dancer because he lacks a real "dancer's body"....

Later, NIGHT MARSH starts by (deliberately?) frustrating viewers. A dark room fills with nude dancers of two or three genders. But they're barely visible, lurking in shadows and nooks while they stand immobile, watching an overly long video. After this low point, the rest of the show delights.

All-nude dancing embodies joy, timidity, love, fear, playfulness, disability, more. Not as obviously as Broadway, yet not nearly as opaquely as some avant-garde performances.

This anatomically and politically correct cast chooses to embrace fat dancers along with the slender majority. All dance gracefully, except when they choose to seem ungraceful. Fanciers of eye candy won't feel deprived.

Puppy-piles roll across the floor, three boys in one, three girls in another, like mini-playparties at a low-grav space resort.

When all the naked dancers shake at once, the floor vibrates beneath the clothed audience. I remember an urban legend about a walking cat's rhythm destabilizing the Golden Gate Bridge.

This dance, with added words, images, and sounds, resembles a theatrical play. A series of implied themes, without narrative or plot. Mostly dramatic, relieved by some clowning.

A beautiful one-legged man, singing Alouette duet with another man, puts snow-white powder on a woman's large butt. The room goes dark. Then the whitened moon becomes mini-screen for video of a smaller butt dancing.

And as of 5 July 2004, the dadafest website still presents info for the event which began on 12 July 2003, a Saturday.
No mention of 2004, in which 12 July falls on a Monday. Alas.)

..............

USA: circa July 12-15: U.S. Senate begins debate on a so-called "Federal Marriage Amendment",
which would ban same-sex marriages; and which might also ban civil unions.
Bigots would need 2/3 majority (67 votes) to pass a constitutional amendment through the Senate.
Republican leaders don't expect to get 67, but they do hope anti-queer debate will distract voters' attention from Iraq.

The U.S. House of Representatives may also debate this queer-bashing amendment,
before the Democratic Party national convention.

...........

MASS: Boston: July 25, Sunday, starting around 12 noon at Boston Commons:
