In Defense of Animals News (with MLK in mind)

by Mat Thomas
The world celebrates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this Monday, January 17 to honor the great civil rights leader and peace advocate. Reverend King inspired people toward justice by preaching a gospel of love, forgiveness and harmony.
Following in the footsteps of Gandhi, he led a non-violent revolution to bring about equality between races and peace to our divided society. The struggle that Dr. King fought continues today - not only between races, but also between species. From factory farms to research laboratories and beyond, billions of animals continue to suffer inconceivable violence on a vast scale at the hands of humans. The basis of this violence is an unfair discrimination against non-human species.

It is significant that in the years since Dr. King's assassination, both his oldest son Dexter and his widow Coretta Scott King have become vegan. Dexter has said, "Veganism has given me a higher level of awareness and spirituality." In the early 90s, he introduced his mother to the diet, and she's been meatless ever since. Their commitment to compassion illustrates how a lifestyle that doesn't cause violence to animals is most consistent with the values of peace and equality for which Dr.
King so bravely fought.

In the spirit of this special holiday, IDA urges you to continue Dr. King's work by joining the revolution for animals. Please do all that you can to reach out to people with compassion, understanding and respect. This can be more challenging than lashing out in anger or hatred against an "enemy," but Dr. King firmly believed that it was the only path to lasting peace.

We have a dream for the animals, and we can all help make it come true.

1. National Media Spotlights IDA's "2004 Ten Worst Zoos For Elephants" List

IDA rang in the New Year in 2005 with our first ever Top Ten list (http://www.idausa.org/news/currentnews/10zoo.html) to let everyone know which U.S. zoos treat elephants the worst. The list includes zoos from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles and everywhere in between, revealing a widespread pattern of substandard treatment and living conditions.

Television networks, radio stations, and newspapers all over the country drew on our "2004 Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants" list for news stories. Some used it as a springboard for more extensive coverage of the growing controversy over elephants in zoos.
Click here to read the Houston Chronicle article, "Zoo's Elephant Program Criticized"
(http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2982745). We are especially pleased that coverage is heaviest in those cities on the list, because it's the people living in these communities that can make desperately needed changes happen.

What You Can Do:

If you live in a city with a zoo that has elephants, we need you for our Elephant Task Force. Whether you simply visit your local zoo and document conditions with your camera or organize a demonstration, you will be helping the elephants by calling attention to their suffering.

If you are interested in joining the IDA Elephant Task Force or would like more information about the ways you can get involved, please send an email to zoos [at] idausa.org. Please include your full name, city, telephone number, and the name of the zoo nearest you.

2. Korean Government Seeks to Legalize Sale of Dog Meat

IDA has learned from our colleagues at Animal Freedom Korea
(AFK) that the Ministry of the Office for Government Policy Coordination in Korea plans to legalize the sale of dog meat by setting standards for hygienic slaughter and processing. The Ministry recently completed a report on "the hygienic control of dog meat," and is about to open an internal debate. Under current Korean law, dogs cannot be sold as food, but the law is not enforced. If the Ministry's plans for hygienic control succeed, it will effectively legalize the dog meat market.

If the sanitary and environmental problems are so serious as to require government intervention, then the Korean Government must ban dog meat - not legalize it - in order to protect its citizens. AFK participated in the policy discussion for the hygienic control of dog meat and strongly opposed the measure.
The group is actively working to block all efforts to legalize dog meat in Korea.

The sale of dog meat can only be legalized if the scheme is approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), which is responsible for the hygienic control of livestock.
However, the MAF has already stated that it is impossible to hygienically control dog meat. In addition, the people of Korea must support legalization for it to take effect. The fact is, very few Koreans eat dog meat and most wish to see it banned.
Despite this, the Ministry of the Office for Government Policy Coordination continues to seek legalization.

What You Can Do

Please write polite letters to the following officials and let them know that for the health of their people and for the millions of dogs who are already suffering unimaginable cruelties, they must not legalize the sale of dog meat.

3. SHARK Campaign Lassoes Campbell Soup Company for Sponsoring Rodeo

As part of their concerted campaign against using animals for "sport," SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness) is taking aim at food industry giant Campbell Soup Company for sponsoring rodeos, which cripple and kill many animals every year. Through its subsidiary Pace Foods, Campbell not only sponsors "regular"
rodeos, but also competitions that include steer roping, an event so cruel that it is banned in all but a few western states. Even worse, Pace is the official corporate sponsor of an individual steer roper!

SHARK has repeatedly contacted Campbell's headquarters in Camden, New Jersey and requested a meeting with Campbell CEO Doug Conant and others to discuss the issue. However, the good people at Campbell have rudely refused to return SHARK's phone calls, so the organization is asking consumers and animal advocates to hold the company accountable by telling them that they will lose business when they support cruelty to animals.

What You Can Do:

Contact Campbell Soup Company and express your disapproval with their decision to market their products by sponsoring rodeos.
Let them know that Campbell's products won't go in your shopping cart until the company stops paying people to hurt and kill animals for entertainment.

4. Tell Brooks Brothers to Stop Selling Fur!

Brooks Brothers, "the country's outstanding retailer of classic clothing for men and women," is selling many items made with real fur from beavers (http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=326&Product_Id=929429),
foxes
(http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=246&Product_Id=935347),
and mink
(http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=245&Product_Id=934971).

Millions of foxes, beavers, mink and other animals suffer a lifetime of extreme confinement on fur farms and death from anal or vaginal electrocution. Still more wild animals are caught in traps that mangle their limbs and keep them alive and suffering for days before the trapper comes to kill them.

What You Can Do

Please contact Brooks Brothers and politely tell the retailer that in losing their lives, animals pay too high a price for fur. Please urge the company to go fur-free, just like Inditex, a large international retailer, agreed to do last year. The sale of fur items accounts for a very small portion of Brooks Brothers' annual revenue, so remind them that what they lose by offending customers may more than offset any profits they make by selling a few fur items.

5. Help Your Community "Kick the Meat Habit" This Spring

Every year on or around March 20 - the first day of spring - thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and a host of other countries hold informative and educational events for the Great American Meatout. In 2005, Farm Animal Reform Movement
(FARM) celebrates Meatout's 20th anniversary with a revamped website (http://www.meatout.org) and exciting new Meatout events!

What You Can Do

Organizing or participating in a Meatout event is an easy and effective way to promote healthy and humane dietary choices in your community. Here are some suggested activities:

1. Lace up for the animals by organizing a Meatout Walk to raise funds and increase vegetarian awareness in your community. FARM will award great prizes to the organizers of the best walks.
Click here (link to http://www.meatout.org/action/walk.htm) for details.

2. Educate people by setting up an information table on a busy sidewalk or at a festival. Contact FARM for materials and a banner.

3. Have a cooking demonstration, and hand out scrumptious vegan food samples for people to try.

4. Organize a screening of Peaceable Kingdom
(http://www.tribeofheart.org/pk.htm) to show people how animals on factory farms are abused, or hold a lecture on vegetarianism.

Visit FARM's Action Center (http://www.meatout.org/action) for even more ideas. Also check FARM's online Events Directory
(http://www.meatout.org/events) to find out what Meatout events are already being planned in your area. Whether you plan an event or participate in someone else's, please register online at http://www.meatout.org/events/registration.htm or call 1-800-MEATOUT. You can register even if your plans are still forming, and update them at any time.

FARM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, public interest organization based in Bethesda, Maryland that promotes meat-free and dairy-free foods for a healthy, well-fed world.

6. Los Angeles Times Magazine Reports on Custody Battles - for Animals

An article in the most recent issue of the Los Angeles Times Magazine reports that courtroom custody battles for animal companions are becoming more commonplace and controversial.
These legal contests increasingly resemble child custody cases, with vast sums of money paid to divorce lawyers hotly competing over which guardian gets to keep a cherished animal companion.
This is one more clear indication that most people feel strong emotional connections to the animals in their lives, and consider them members of the family. However, the difference between child and animal custody cases is that in the eyes of the law, animals are considered strictly property, like home furnishings or a car, and their welfare is not a factor in the court's decision.

While pointing out the discrepancies between people's bond with animals and their status under the law, the article cites IDA's Guardian Campaign as one sign that society's attitudes toward animals is changing. Our success in getting over 40 cities and one state to incorporate the term "guardian" into their city codes shows that a simple language change has the power to transform the relationship between people and companion animals.

What You Can Do

If you live in a community that doesn't yet legally recognize people as animal "guardians," you can make a huge difference by spearheading an effort to amend the wording of your city's by-laws. Please see http://www.guardiancampaign.com for resources that can help you succeed, and contact valerie [at] idausa.org for more information about how you can get involved.
