IDF to investigate house demolitions in Gaza
Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Moshe Ya'alon has appointed Major General (res.) Ze'ev Livneh to head an inquiry into the Israel Defense Forces' destruction of houses in Khan Yunis last summer, done without proper authorization.
Last year, the IDF demolished 25 houses it said were partially constructed. However, it turned out that the decision was made by local commanders, without notifying the Southern Command or obtaining authorization.
An internal Southern Command inquiry, though critical of the decision-making process, found that had authorization been requested, it would probably have been granted.
Ya'alon decided to appoint Livneh on the recommendation of the military advocate general, Brigadier General Avichai Mandelblit, after receiving the findings of the internal inquiry.
