Letter from the ELF

by Penne Usher
Editor's Note: The Auburn Journal received the following letter claiming responsibility for the recent firebombing attempts in the name of the Earth Liberation Front. It is reprinted below.
Letter from the ELF

Thursday, January 20, 2005 5:52 AM PST

(The last two paragraphs of the letter have been omitted due to its call to the public for additional terrorist tactics.)

The Earth Liberation Front, ELF, claims responsibility for the actions taken in Placer County. The sabotage of countless tractors, broken windows and graffiti in many developments in the area, attempted arson on 4 homes in JTS Communities Twelve Bridges housing development in the city of Lincoln and the Park Hill Office buildings under construction, in the city of Auburn.

To our utter disbelief and dismay our incendiary devices failed to ignite and the damage caused was minimal. Due to a bad batch of model rocket igniters the delays we constructed failed to ignite our buckets of ½ diesel ½ gasoline, 4 of which were left at the JTS site and 5 at the proposed office building. The flaw was not caught during testing due to the use of other rocket igniters. Rest assured next time those targeted will not be so fortunate.

The purpose was to cause as much economic damage to JTS Communities, a major developer in one of the fastest growing areas in the country, by burning 4 $750,000 Luxury homes nestled on that cul-de-sac to the ground. It was done in honor of everyone who has felt helpless to sprawl and development, everyone who feels their rural lifestyles are being threatened by these mass-produced designer communities, everyone who has ever looked at that hill with chills down their spine and been sickened to the core of their being by the cancer spewing forth from Lincoln.

Though our fires failed the actions were not completely unsuccessful. We are not so naïve to believe that we would have stopped development in Twelve Bridges. Though we could have caused over 2 million in damages, it was still a fairly symbolic protest and the message should have still registered; that we are exceptionally serious, the necessity of new discussions and that all of the true eco-terrorists such as JTS should consider themselves forewarned.

We are called eco-terrorists, but this is complete folly spat about to scare people as well as to discredit our motives and us. Eco, short for ecosystem combined with terrorist, defined by the U.S. Government, as an individual or group that indiscriminately kills civilians or uses violence to achieve their political goals. The ELF is not violent; violence cannot be committed against inanimate objects. And our goal is to end politics. We are said to have no compassion for people because we cause damage to their businesses and property, but the State gives our 22 year sentences for an ELF activist who burned 3 SUV's, whereas murderers and rapists get out on less than half of that; who and what are they more concerned about protecting? There has, and the FBI vouch, never been one person who has died or been injured as a result of an ELF action. Now in this light-eco-terrorists look a lot like freeways, cars, Maxxam, Shell, BP, Monsanto, McDonalds, JTS, KB Homes, agriculture, industry, progress, capitalism/communism, and civilization itself. If it is eco-terrorists the FBI wants, perhaps they should b after these corporations and institutions.

We understand that voting has not and will never achieve anything meaningful or change anything fundamentally. If voting changed anything it would be illegal. So we have decided that it is up to us to defend the ecosystems being desecrated by civilized progress and its unending development and appetite for resource extraction as well as its economic and industrial expansion around the globe.

These actions were done in solidarity with all those engaged in sabotage and resistance around the world; Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Mexico, Brazil among others especially the indigenous struggle against the onslaught of modernization. The indigenous struggle and the 1st world anarchy movement has fused to form a cohesive unit; our struggle and plight for liberation is against the same beast.

The office building was also targeted as a statement against work and the horror of the cubical, which no animal should be exposed to, human and non-human alike. As well as to protest the Death Culture of alienation, boredom, cancer, and depression that convinces young girls to think of themselves as bodies, makes the only adventures for women in the mall, where romance is restricted to books, where fun is in front of a television, or behind the wheel of a car, where older folks are put out of sight and out of mind, where you can be out all day and never touch dirt or grass, where nobody will look each other in the eye, or tell each other how they feel, or that what they really want is to be loved and share themselves wholly with someone, where parents can choose the sex, stature, eye and hair color of their children in a lab, where 12 year olds hang themselves, where nanotechnology can rid the world of everything natural and replace it with machines, where electrodes are jammed in animals brains and they are tortured to researcher labs for the sake of selling products and curing the diseases civilization is manufacturing, where genes are added/extracted from cows so they will grow extra ribs, where cows are molested their entire lives for milk and cheese by a machine, where animals are bred to be mass murdered for a "quarterpounder," where ground water and fish are contaminated by Prozac, where the earth is ripped open and stripped bare, where ecosystems are terrorized and its inhabitants slaughtered, where the earth is looked at in terms of resources, where our food is built by geneticists, covered in poison and is itself poison, where people starve to death daily, where blackberries patches are paved over, where desire is childish, where everything gives us cancer, where Indians are killed for oil pipelines and where cars, clothes, things and ideas define people. Where we are repeatedly told from birth that we are not enough and that just one more mink coat, one more pair of Nikes, that we are one Hummer away from being happy, from bring fulfilled and feeling good about ourselves and having people love and understand us. We are pushed deeper into despair with every swipe of the credit card and fake smile we put on and go home and cry for no reason. Well we have every reason; our souls are being collected by ad agencies, Bankers, and Christian cults.

Psychologically speaking we are all on the verge of death, with no way out in sight. Suicide, alcoholism, and drug addiction are epidemic. Nearly everyone is on drugs be it Prozac, lithium, lattes, mochas, cigarettes, beer, pot, cocaine or chocolate. The world we have is empty and boring us to death. WE are forced to sell our souls 8, 10, 12, 14 + hours a day 5, 6 even 7 days a week for more than half our lives, not to mention school before that, they have us working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. Even resistance and subversive ideas can be marketed and sold to us, "Fight Club" is criticized because it is so mainstream and commercialized, but it is not the film nor the ideas in it that are not radical it is the people who watch it that render its subversive content harmless, they continue participating, obeying, working, buying, selling, voting, shopping, recycling, watching television and taking their pills. They don't do anything, don't demand more from their lives and are not selfish or misbehaved enough to make anything happen. Well, we are not all like that. Many of us are actually trying to change things in real ways that truly threaten the system and the means of doing so are in fact going to be illegal. Those in power are not going to allow actions that have the capacity to actually change things, threaten power and its legitimacy, the flow business or consumption, privilege, or the control and dominion of the earth and its inhabitants as well as and their seat at the top, not to mention the existence of such a seat.

We want to see full unemployment, we want to see zero voter turn out, we want to see smashed windows, ashes in place of offices and banks, freeways taken over by grass and building crack and fall. We want to see people creep out of their protective cages in their gated communities and really meet and talk to their neighbors, we want to see ghettos evacuated, cities abandoned, and weeds where geometric rows of genetically engineered corn once was. We want to see people kissing, and playing, laughing and dancing, we want to see gifts instead of competition, relearning how to be a part of nature, and become wild again. We want life, real life without distraction. We want to liberate desire and live hard and dangerously. We want loyal and individual autonomy. We want anarchy. Just like those wonderful women who altered the Breast Implants and Auto Mall billboards awhile ago, we want a world people love themselves and accept themselves and that they are in fact beautiful the way they are. To those brave souls, we would like to offer our deepest gratitude, and want you to know that you were the inspiration in the hearts of us old republicans (we voted simply for less taxes) to think more critically and broke us out of the paradigm of helplessness and loneliness of growing old with nothing to offer.

We want our entire lives to be filled with the sensation of all the immediate hopes, dreams and desires an individual feels when coming close to death. As seniors the reality of death is recognized as immanent and living moment to moment is all we have, we live in much the same way as that of children without time and focal constructs of past and future, but continuous moments strung together. We want to put the urgency back into life that parents, teachers, school counselors, pastors, unions, bosses, leaders, governments and the FBI have stolen from young people today and recognize that one day we are all going to die and to live accordingly.

We are through with the lies and empty attempts by the Left in communism, democracy (which is a form of government), production, and green consumerism. There is nor reforming, or greening up possible to save this system, no amount of electric cars, solar panels, water conservation, or recycling will save it, civilization is fundamentally flawed, rotten to the core and must be abandoned and stopped before it kills us all before it falls.

With sincere love,

Agent Emma Goldman and the Crimethine Senior Officers of the Earth Liberation Front. Practice random and senseless acts of sabotage.

Lokking at the long term ecological effect of suburban sprawl, ELF activists will in the future be remembered as heroes in stories told around the campfires. In the present they are demonized as "eco-terrorists". Not that most ELFers want the label "hero", it just kind of goes with the territory of being a dedicated activist. Self preservation is also a motive, many humans in modern civilized society lack this self preservation instinct and are content to follow the rules and not question authority, be it neo-conservative or neo-liberal. Anarchy is the path least traveled yet the healthiest choice for the individual, community and life on Earth. We are all being strangled by industrial pollution and regulation..

People used to live in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Valley/foothills without the need 4 paved MALWART parkinglots, suburBAN LAWNS (u yuppies pay people 2 mow lawns, u call that a decent job??), SUVs, and other wastes of resources that glorify American consumption patterns gained via imperialist war and military occupation. The oil in Iraq has other desires than being combusted in a wealthy yuppies' SUV..

People lived by taking only what they needed in a Valley that was blessed with plenty food and tule reeds for housing and rafts. This may not match intentions with capitalist developers who would rather destroy nature than learn how to live with it..

People living in Bayview/Hunters Point can't even eat the fish there because the SF Bay is so polluted thanks to PG&E and the US Navy Base that won't clean up their toxic waste but man we we afford to dump it on other people in Iraq. The SF Bay ecosystem used to be filled with sealife before everything was destroyed by industry. Yes, people really can live within nature if we only give our Madre Tierra a chance to breathe!!

As a lefty liberal activist, i don't label myself anarchist in action since i still depend on the system because of its prolonged existance. If i can't pay 4 the apple at the farmers market i'll eventually drag my ass out to the apple tree and pick the apple myself if i get hungry enough..

Property schmoperty!!

Much love and respect 2 ELF!!

"Violence cannot be committed against inanimate objects."

I disagree. Arson kills. Shame on you firestarters.

You people are whacko. Let me know where you live so that I can burn down your house. 95% of this country is completely undeveloped and in case you haven't noticed, property costs in CA have more than tripled in the last 7 years. Mostly because you can't build any where, because whackos like you are messing it all up. Who does it hurt, those with low incomes who now can't buy houses, because it costs 450k for a 2,000 square foot house in a decent school district. The only thing that will come of the ELF dorks is to get them criminal records. In the end we will put you in insane asylums where you belong.

I kind of find it funny that the letter above spoke of the indigenous struggle. The apartment complex targeted for arson by the so called ELF this weekend was an economic project of local Miwok people who are indigenous to the area. Such projects are neccesary to our indigenous struggle for economic prosperity. Diversity in our economic holdings may someday be neccesary if the casino projects are taken away. Remember, we indigenous people from around here aren't just part of the history. You talk about the peoples in South America struggling against the oil companys, but what about the NDNs in your own back yard fighting against the ELF trying to destroy our economic projects. Anyone that stands in the way of our self determination is just as bad as the US government in its historic dealings with NDN people. THE ELF HAS TARGETED INDIGENOUS PEOPLE THAT HAVE STRUGGLED HERE IN CALIFORNIA FOR THE LAST THREE CENTURIES. Come on now, they must have something better to do.
OH, and by the way, would somebody please explain to me what the hell is environmental about burning gasoline and a bunch of resources that are just GOING TO BE REPLACED. Sounds like some pretty flawed logic to me.
Sincerely
A local indigenous person

95% undeveloped-

What rock did you crawl out from under? My guess would be a rock existing under a big bubble. Where do you get a 95% undeveloped figure, Weyerhauser? And exactly what do you mean by "undeveloped" anyway? Taking, by force, 99% of the land from the original inhabitants? What about old growth forests? Once, you could walk from one end of the country to the other and never leave old growth forest. Now, you would have to do an awful lot of DRIVING and searching to find ANY old growth. Do you know why? Because there's less than 1% of the original old growth left, if that. I could go on. Number of animal species eliminated, destruction of wild areas for farms, destruction of farms for towns and roads, the growth and then sprawl of cities, escape from cities into suburbs, escape from the suburbs by developing rural areas. On and on it goes. I would like to see someone on this list respond to the original comment about the buildings targetted being a part of an indigenous community financial thing. Is this true? If it is, it'd be good to hear some comments from others, especially radical native folks out there. By the way, Ward Churchill, AIM activist, professor, and revolutionary, is under attack by right-wing nutbags, who, as always, take everything out of context in their crusade to spread their twisted Christian ideology. It's only one month in to the Bush Four Year Reich and already his minions see his presidency as a green-light to terrorize any and all dissent. Divide and conquer, that's their philosophy. They have to demonize the ELF because it is their shadow. We are women, they call us hysterical. It must be true because they say it on the news and in the classroom.
95% undeveloped. Right. How about a nice big cup of shut the fuck up?

by elf supporter, but not the latest
Ok, so you dimwits attack an indigenous development. That was real bright. Or was it, the mainstream press latched onto the fires in Mass. a few months back saying it was ELF and then it turns out it was a cooky security guard who worked for the development. Watching the news last night, there was no mention about the economics of the developments and whether the bankers or developers are behind schedule and would benefit from a lil turmoil with this project, so as to not have to live up to the contract schedule and thus avoid paying late fees for being behind on the development project. The three news channels who covered the latest fires or attempts did hit pieces on why vandelism is so bad and showed a snippit of Craig Rosenburg's jaw flapping.

No mention as to whether the developments where being built with certified sustained harvested wood or using solar panels to reduce the fossil fuel dependancy. Nothing, just a over dramatic fluff piece intended to scare people.

To the ELF'ers, come on, get educated and put yourself at risk for something worthy or at least put some credibility into your action. This one was sorta lame going after a tribe's apartment complex. Learn who your targeting and in doing so,, you might educate yourself enough to find a point of pressure like the achilles tendon,, but in the meantime, it looks like a juvenillle act of vandelism. Damn, if the FBI calls this terrorism, I'd hate to wonder what the World trade towers being crashed into by the planes on 9/11 was considered, the holocaust? Geesh, oh wait, it's the Flubbing Bubbling Idiots who got the mouthpiece on this one. Come on Agent Doyle, your boys and girls should be out tracking down the missing bio agents/nukes and chemicals that threaten the american public and the world at large. What about all those who march across the US border and blend into the US, what ya doing about that? Leave this bullshit vandelism to the local popo and focus your energies on a real sustained threat from the backlash of american foreign policy that is coming our way thanks to the bush reich and situations like the torture of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. Those iraqi's relatives/toture victims, now they pose a threat of terrorism, a arson, that's not terrorism you dumb fuckers at the FBI and the bumb asses tooting your horns on the mainstream news stations. Get real, this ain't terrorism, that's for suure.

Geesh, you'd think Ward Churchill's piece that stirred up the controversy was written last week, when in fact he wrote it several years ago you dumbass journalist.

Viva la ELF!, just not these latest actions or were they insurance scams like the Vail fire. Yes the Vail fires were done by insiders who worked for Vail associates and stood something to gain from destroying the lynx habitat.
by luna moth
Of all the developments to choose from, why would ELF choose an indigenous people's apartment complex?

So today i found out that the development targeted by ELF were apartments built by the Miwok people. All this time i was thinking huge yuppie supermansions. Shame on me for not getting all the info before making the comment above..

The targets in Maryland were low-income housing, and the so-called "ELF" turned out to be some racist thugs..

Hmmm, something seems to be happening here that i can't quite figure out. We don't really ever know who the ELFers are, anyone could claim 2 b ELF. Could some right wing individuals be trying to give the ELF name a bad reputation?

Other targets more appropriate are the yuppie supermansions. This collosal waste of space and timber to build megahouses for the wealthy is terrorism. Ski lodges, military bases, petroleum refineries and other high risk targets are more worthy yet also more dangerous, but definitely better choices than apartments built by a local indigenous peoples..
