Bachem produce many things including rabbit and rat serum. Here is their own
inside information on how rat serum is made:

Procedure: Mature rate whole blood (Sprague-Dawley, averging 7-8 weeks of age,
either sex) is colleted at the time of slaughter and refrigerated within 6
hours, and processed and frozen within 24 hours. The serum is later thawed,
pooled, bottled and frozen at -20 celcius.
