Seymour Hersh talks to Mark Lawson

by BBC Newsnight
Seymour Hersh is a controversial figure. His fans have described him as the "great reporter of his generation" and, that rare thing, a journalist who has had "an actual effect on the course of events".

His critics, such as President Bush, take a different view, allegedly saying to President Musharraf of Pakistan: "Seymour Hersh is a liar".

Yet Hersh has had two of the most significant scoops of the last fifty years; it was he who broke the story of American soldiers' abuse of Iraqis in Abu Ghraib prison last year and, 35 years before, it was he who told the world how US soldiers of another generation killed up to 500 Vietnamese civilians in the village of My Lai.

In this remarkable interview, Mark Lawson asks Hersh about his motivation, about his ethics, and why the liberal press in the States has become so marginalised.
