Brief Description: Mr. Norman Y. Mineta serves as the current U.S. Secretary of Transportion, an agency with over 100,000 employees and a $58.7 billion budget. Mr. Mineta previously served as Secretary of Transportation under President Clinton, and was the first Asian Pacific American to serve in any Cabinet. He is currently the only Democrat in the Cabinet. A Bay Area native, Mr. Mineta served as a member of U.S. House of Representatives, 1975-1995, representing the heart of California’s Silicon Valley. Mineta and his family were among the 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry forced from their homes and into internment camps during World War II. In Congress, Mineta was the driving force behind passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which officially apologized for and redressed the injustices endured by Japanese Americans during the War. Mr. Mineta will discuss the recent agreement between the US and China, a part of the Open Skies Agreement, which will double the number of airlines flying between the two countries and allow a nearly fivefold increase in passenger and cargo flights.
