Help stop Santa Clara County Shelter from closing one day a week and killing more

by Deniz Bolbol
A friend in Santa Clara County asked that I forward the following alert.
Please write a quick email or call the Santa Clara County Supervisors (listed below) asking them to NOT close the shelter for an extra day a week.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors were recently mislead into believing that closing the County Shelter an extra day a week would help cut costs without any negative effects to the animals being fostered there. Under this misinformation, the County Board of Supervisors voted to close the Shelter an extra day a week, effective September 1, 2005.

We were informed that closing the Shelter for an extra day a week, would result in a 10% INCREASE in killing healthy adoptable animals, especially dogs! Meaning, 150 healthy/adoptable dogs will be killed a month because there won't be enough room to house them, with the amount of incoming strays they have. Many healthy/adoptable cats will be killed too.

We urge you to contact all 5 Supervisors (contact info below) and ask them to re-vote on this issue and not to close the Shelter an extra day a week because additional dogs and cats will have to be killed due to this police change. Dogs and cats should not have to pay the price for budgetary constraints.

Please let the Board of Supervisors know that because the Shelter is out in the country, and is already open on a limited basis, people are tying their dogs to the gate, and driving off, if they Shelter is closed. They are also putting cats in boxes, putting them at the gate, and driving off, or just releasing their pets out in front of the Shelter! San Martin is much hotter in the summer, than San Jose. So, PLEASE, mention how awful this is for these poor abandoned animals.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY TO WRITE!

Thank you for your help!
If you need further information please contact Phil Jewitte, the Director of the County's of Santa Clara's Animal Shelter at 408-681-1105 or 408-465-2921.
