Immigrants & Supporters Take Action in Sacramento
by Ramses Friday, Jul. 08, 2005 at 11:00 AM

Over 200 immigrants and supporters convened on the State Capitol on Wednesday to demand drivers licenses without special markings to undocumented residents and to oppose border vigilantes in California.

Over 200 immigrants and supporters convened on the State Capitol on Wednesday to demand drivers licenses without special markings to undocumented residents and to oppose border vigilantes in California. They met inside with State Senator Gil Cedillo to demand no special markings on the licenses, and then held a press conference at the steps of the Capitol while a group of up to ten citizens practiced civil disobedience at the Governor’s office.

Two buses of immigrants from San Francisco and dozens more from the Northern California area met with State Senator Cedillo in a crowded meeting room inside the Capitol to talk about the driver license legislature. In this session immigrant workers and families expressed their strong opposition to the proposed markings on the drivers licenses to undocumented residents. “We do not want markings, we are not animals,” chanted a day laborer from San Francisco. Senator Cedillo seemed to agree but could not guarantee passage of the driver license legislature without such marking. Similar legislature has been vetoed by Governor Schwarznegger once already, and he is expected to do so again if the marking isn’t included. The State Bill SB60, introduced by Cedillo, awaits a hearing later this summer.

Outside a press conference took place at 11am, followed by a short march around the Capitol by immigrant families and workers. Immigrant families focused on the need for them to be able to drive, while workers opposed anti-immigrant hatred by groups such as the “Minutemen” border vigilantes from Arizona chanting, “Inmigrantes, si! Vigilantes, no!” They fear that the Governor’s support for the border vigilantes will escalade xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment towards their community.

Inside the capitol, a small group of up to ten sat peacefully in front of the Governor’s office as an act of civil disobedience. The Governor did not communicate, and within half an hour they were arrested and taken away by California Highway Patrol. Only one person was read their rights by CHP and all were quickly moved out of the Capitol under charges of “obstructing Capitol business,” reported Renee Saucedo of the San Francisco Day Laborers Program. They were released the following morning.

Note: Ironically, during the arrest, the California Highway Patrol managed to lose the driver's license of one the women arrested. At this time the CHP has admited to losing the license, but has not found it(!) --Jeff G

Immigrant Communities marched against the Governor and CA State Senator Cedillo to demand Unmarked Licenses and, demand that the governor withdraw support for border hate groups.

What: Bay area immigrant workers, families, students, advocates and their allies will stage a press conference in front of the state capital building in Sacramento. The protest is to show community opposition to Project SB60, which is being presented by State Senator Cedillo on the house floor for approval. A bill that requires immigrants who don’t have federal documentation of residency to apply for an State Id at local DMV’s and receive Id’s with a marking to show that they are not federally acknowledge as residents. These communities are also in solidarity against the invitation given to the “Minutemen” by Governor Schwarzenegger where we will a have a local community advocate speak out about this issue in our press conference. Our demand is that the Governor retracts his invitation and denounces the “Minutemen” as a racist hate group, offensive to communities of color and immigrant communities.

Where: State Capitol Building - Sacramento, CA 95814. (Front steps at the entrance to building)

When: Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 11:00am to 12:00pm press conference.

Who: Sponsored by The Driving Licenses Coalition and supported by organizations such as St. Peter’s Housing, PODER, The Day Laborer Program, Colectiva de Mujeres, La Raza Unida de City College, Filipino for Affirmative Action (FAA), Mujeres Activas Unidas, The Midnight Express Coalition and Berkeley University

Why: By branding us like animals with marked drivers licenses and supporting vigilante groups such as the “Minutemen” our communities are not being treated fairly as workers, students and humans who contribute to the U$ economy. These two things say to us that the California government promotes racism and xenophobia to against all immigrants and communities of color. The governor and state senator Cedillo seem to forget that we are human beings and deserve to have equal rights, but we as a coalition demand that equal rights be for all people affected by American imperialism in our pueblos here and in The Third World.

Media Visuals: The last speaker at our press conference will be talking to our community about the demand against the Governors support of the “Minute Men” action in San Diego scheduled for September.

Damn, I also screwed up the titles to the photos. Hopefully viewers can piece together which goes with which.....
Hey guys, denying driver's license to illegals is perfectly fine. My wife is a LEGAL immigrant (and now a citizen) and had not problem getting a LEGAL drivers' license. When these illegals commit crimes on the road, we need to have some way of knowing who they are. As it stands, they already broke the law by their illegal entance in this country, so why should we trust them to tell us who they are?

Can I go to Mexico illegally and get a Mexican driver's license without any documentation? NO. Don't expect the same here. Do it legally and stop whinning!
by irlandeso
They didn't cross the border, the borders crossed them...

Many Irish brothers saw this quite clearly during the US Mexico war, switched sides, and fought valiantly on behalf of Mexico and their Catholic brethren...

Beyond that it is debatable how "legal" it is for anyone to be on this land, the Americas, beyond those who were native in the first place.

So try thinking about that pilgrim...

irlandeso, this is not about history. It is about the present. These people want to come into this country illegally and get a drivers' license without any documentation. They were not born here. If they want a drivers' license, they are entitled to one by following the law, like my wife did.
What happens when one of these illegals crashes into you? You would have no idea who he is and you would not get compensated.
What is so bad about having to follow the same laws I had to follow to get a license? Other than you don't want to admit you are illegal?

by Native Land
Mr Bob oso May I remind you that the past is related to the present and the future. To deny My native brothers from south of rio grande a pernit to drive a car isbacj wards. Lets saysome one else controled Europe and said that people from france could not go to another places in the European union and drive a car. They would be out raged just like we are hear. Native people from his continent have the right to travel on our land and drive cars. We may not all have legal documents but you still want us to pick your food in the feilds clean your toilets take care of your kids, cook your food, pick up youre palates in the restaurants, clean your gardens. The least you can do is let us hae drivers lic. If it was not for us your economy would colapse because you would not have nobody to do all the hard work and pay all those taxes that you care are illegal. Rember you stole our land killed 90 % of the population and what ever goes around comes around what gos up must come down it is only a matter of time we take back our land. The foundation of his empire is built on genocide which will come back to haunt you. The Indian wars never ended now they come from the south to claim their land.
by gringo guy, the minuteman volunteer!
so, can i go get a mexican driver license? how 'bout one from the netherlands, or even pakistan.

sarcasm off//

ok, you people (radicals) just need to quit hiding your true intentions. admit that you think that much of the southwest u.s. belongs to mexico, and this is just another sneaky way to try and get it back. None of you even have the balls to be honest.

That pathetic country (mexico) basically uses the states as an atm machine due to it's corrupt government, uneducated people, rampant crime rings, and so on Why don't you idiots fix your own country, you bunch of lazy-asses.

Bottom line, illegal immigrants are entitled to as much here as I am in Mexico. And that is exactly JACK SHIT!

You want a drivers license? Come here legally. If you don't, tough shit. No license for you.

thank you very much

How is this post racist? It's true - name another country that you could enter illegally and then say licenses/healthcare/govt. assistance is your right? And GET it?

Certainly not Mexico, nor any of the other South American countries.

Western/Eastern Europe?

Nothing in Africa...

Zilch in Asia.

Wanna try it in an Arabic/Persian nation? I wasn't even allowed in to Dahrain to visit a friend...

Before you start throwing out the 'R' word, realize that the US is one of the most welcoming societies in thw world. Does racism exist here? Yes, but it only takes a little world travel to realize how integrated we are as a whole.
by Bob
Gringo's statements are not racists. Don't go using the racist label just because you don't agree with him or me for that matter. Your over use of the term will be like the boy who cried wolf.

To take his comments a little further, I had to provide documentation to show who I am before I received a drivers' licence. If you get your way, I could be a wanted felon of the worst type and get a drivers' license in California. I could just say that I'm an illegal and have no documentation. I could then use an alias and hide from the law while I commit other crimes in California.

By the way, what is so difficult about becoming legal? My wife is an Italian immigrant. She is not a legal U.S. citizen who would throw out every illegal in this country.
by Gringo guy
I'd like someone.....ANYONE.....to explain to me just why in the world an illegal immigrant from ANYWHERE is entitled to a privilege such as a drivers license, let alone health care, welfare, etc.

I could not get these benefits if I entered a country illegally. why should people get them here?

I say again, illegal immigrants are entitled to as much here as I am in Mexico. And that is jack shit. Furthermore, I wouldnt EXPECT them from another country if i snuck in. Have a little pride for god's sake.

I honestly think some of you are insane, incredibly stupid, or have some kind of ulterior motive.

Dear Native Land:

People in European countries do have the means to drive between countries: It’s called a legal passport and proof of insurance
(International insurance). As far as our economy collapsing if illegal immigrants didn’t do all the “hard work in this country”, the hard work in this country was done by Americans long before illegal immigrants showed up on the scene. I grew up doing all the jobs you mentioned.
As far as genocide is concerned the history of Mexico and several other Central and South American governments is littered with incidents of genocide.
1. Former President Luis Echeverría, indicted for the killing of 25-30 student protesters in 1971.
2. Since 1993, more than 4,000 women - workers and students - have disappeared in Ciudad Juarez. According to Amnesty International, 327 of them have been found tortured, raped, mutilated and murdered, after having been kidnapped in the centre of the city at the end of their workday in the maquilas [assembly plants in the US border region], or leaving their computing academies, their bodies abandoned on vacant land.
3. And lets not forget how the Mexican government, after the Genocide Convention in 2002 requireing Mexican courts to lift any statute of limitations on charges of genocide, decided that their "interpretation" allows Mexico to continue to apply the statute of limitations to genocide charges. Another words, they can kill any group they want and never be prosecuted for it.
4. Or if you want to go back a few years how about the Spanish Mission system: The death rate for Indians enslaved in these missions was appalling. Between 1790 and 1800 the Franciscan missionaries took in 16,100 Indians, of whom 9,300 died--a 58 percent death rate. By 1818 the percentage of Indians who died in the missions reached 86 percent.

The only difference between our propensities of genocide and that of Mexico’s et al is that here in the US we seem to have grown out of them. When was the last time you heard about 4,000 women workers and students disappearing in America. For Christ sakes man we loose one high school student in Aruba and the whole country goes nuts.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
