Campaign Update: Statewide Vigils Coming Up, Our Efforts Continue

Dear friends,

Thanks to your involvement, September was a big month for our campaign. We co-sponsored a huge conference in Sacramento, held an inspiring event to honor families of incarcerated children, and got tons of people to call Governor Schwarzenegger to urge him to close the Chad youth prison. Whew!

Even still: Chad is not closed yet. Young people are still languishing in cells and living in fear, isolation, and violence everyday. So, our efforts must continue. We are are planning vigils across the state on November 16th, and gearing up for other big actions. Read below for the update on last month and how you can get involved today!
Statewide Conference Builds Consensus: We Must Close the Abusive Youth Prisons

On September 20th, an important conference co-sponsored by Books Not Bars made a huge splash in Sacramento. Over 200 people gathered for the "Ernst van Loben Sels Conference on Restructuring Youth Corrections" to talk about California's youth prisons. The attendance was full of judges, probation chiefs, district attorneys, public defenders, youth organizers, service providers, and advocates. It was an intense day -- experts from Massachusetts, Louisiana, and Texas brought insights from their states. California corrections officials explained their perspectives, formerly incarcerated youth shared heart-wrenching stories, and county officials discussed challenges at the local level.

As one attendee noted, "there's no way to hear all of this and not support the call to close the youth prisons down."

Congratulations and thanks to the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, the van Loben Sels/Remerock Foundation, the Haigh Scatena Foundation, Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, and the Mentoring Center for putting on a fantastic event.
"Spirit of Freedom" Event Brings Out The Soul of the Movement

Two nights after our big conference, on Sept. 22, we held a very special event in Oakland to honor families of incarcerated youth. "Spirit of Freedom" brought together members of Families for Books Not Bars to share stories, honor their strength, and celebrate our struggles and success. Over 120 people attended -- it was a deeply touching, moving, and inspiring event for everyone there. Thanks to all who came out and to our co-workers Monet, Van, and Alli for putting it all together!
The Governor Gets Tons of Phone Calls

Thank you to everyone who called the Governor last week to urge him to close the Chad youth prison! Our statewide "Call Arnold" action was a big success! The Governor's staff said they received tons of calls on both days. In some cases, the staff even talked with callers about how bad things are in Chad. California's public officials have never received this is the kind of public pressure before.

Locking youth up in abusive warehouse prisons is no longer "out of sight, out of mind" in California. Actions like this prove what we all know to be true: everyday people are willing to take action to protect children and youth from outrageous neglect and abuse, and we won't stop until we win!
Moratorium on Chad Continues, But the Youth Prison Is Still Open

As you may remember, on August 12, the new youth prisons chief placed a moratorium on sending any more youth into the Chad prison. Bernard Warner ordered his staff assess the facility for 45 days. Well, last week ended the 45 day period. Warner released a statement saying that he will continue the moratorium, but Chad will also remain open.

We're sorely disappointed -- Chad is a dangerous, decrepit money pit ruining young people's lives. But, with the moratorium still in place, we still have the opportunity to close it completely.

With your continued support and involvement we can still get it done. Here's how:
Help Us Today:
The Campaign Is Still Growing
1. NOVEMBER 16th: Statewide Vigils
"Light the Way To A New Juvenile Justice System"

On November 16th, people around the state will gather to let the Governor and CYA officials know that the youth prisons are unacceptable and must be closed now. Please join us as a we light the way to a new system.

Books Not Bars will be supporting vigils in four cities: Oakland, Los Angeles, Fresno and Sacramento. We hope you can join us at one of these locations.

OR YOU CAN ORGANIZE YOUR OWN VIGIL: If you can't make it to any of these cities, but you want to support our call to close Chad, we will help you organize your own vigil. If you can get just 15 or 20 people to an event where you live, we'll make the rest easy for you. We'll send you a "vigil in a box", and can give advice and support by phone to make sure you have a great experience and a successful event.

If you're interested, please contact David Kahn by phone or by email at 510-428-3939 x 243 or david [at] ellabakercenter.org, and he'll get you going.
2. Still Time To Call Arnold

When it comes to closing Chad, every day is "Call Arnold" day. It's surprisingly easy, and every call makes a huge difference. Here's how to do it:

1. Dial: 916-445-2841. If the number is busy, please call again after a few minutes.
2. Press 5 for "hot issues," and then press 0 for "other".
3. Stay on hold. It might be a while. Thank you for being patient.
4. A staff person will answer the phone. Tell Arnold's staffer:
"My name is [your name]. I am from [your town or city]. Please tell Governor Schwarzenegger that I am calling to urge him to close Chad today. The Chad youth prison is abusive, unsafe, and a serious waste of money. Youth leave damaged and unprepared, if they leave at all. Close it down before another youth dies. Invest in real rehabilitation and make our juvenile justice system a system that helps youth instead of harms them."
5. Tell 10 friends to call today. Please forward this e-mail!

3. Sign the Petition to the Governor to Close the Youth Prisons

It's never been more important to let Governor Schwarzenegger know that everyone wants him to close the youth prisons. Join thousands of people in signing the Books Not Bars petition to the Governor.

Thank you for supporting this campaign. Your participation makes a difference. Every action you take gets us closer to closing the youth prisons. California must create a system that lifts young people up instead of locking them down.

Sincerely,
Lenore Anderson
