IDA EVENTS

1. Join IDA Protest at UCSF During National Primate Liberation
Week

Every year, Stop Animal Exploitation NOW (SAEN) hosts National
Primate Liberation Week to protest the abuse of tens of
thousands of innocent primates used in experiments throughout
the U.S. From October 15th - 23rd, more than 20 animal
protection organizations in cities around the country are
holding protests, demonstrations and vigils against the
suffering of primates in laboratories. Please join IDA and Vigil
For Animals this week as we shine the spotlight on animal
cruelty taking place under the guise of research at the
University of California - San Francisco (UCSF).

Currently UCSF undertakes a number of research experiments that
use non-human primates. The public knows virtually nothing about
what happens to these unwilling subjects because UCSF does
everything in its power to keep information about its labs
secret. However, UCSF recently paid $92,500 in fines to avoid
hearings on 89 counts of animal welfare violations the USDA
officially lodged against them. At least three primate protocols
were involved in the charges: the invasive brain experiments of
Henry Ralston, Kris Bankiewicz and Michael Merzenich. The USDA
allegations included leaving monkeys unmonitored after surgery,
performing a craniotomy on a monkey without providing
post-operative pain relief, and subjecting at least one monkey
to multiple injections of a brain-destroying chemical through
the carotid artery.

What You Can Do

- Join IDA and Vigil For Animals at UCSF during National Primate
Liberation Week to educate the public about the horrors taking
place inside UCSF labs and encourage insiders to "blow the
whistle" on UCSF's animal cruelty.

What: Leafleting at UCSF against primate experimentation
When: Friday, October 21st from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Main Entrance of UCSF Parnassus Campus, 513 Parnassus
Avenue, San Francisco (click http://www.ucsf.edu/maps/parnassus.pdf for
a campus map)

- IDA also holds weekly outreach events at UCSF's Parnassus
Campus every Wednesday from noon to at 1:00 p.m. Please help us
maintain an ongoing presence on campus to let UCSF officials
know that they will be held accountable for their researcher's
ongoing animal welfare violations.

Please contact Karen Steele at (415) 388-9641 ext. 217 or
karen [at] idausa.org to RSVP. Posters and leaflets will be provided.

2. Help Spread Compassion for Farmed Animals During IDA's World
GO VEGAN Days

IDA's World GO VEGAN Days, October 30th - November 1st, is a
time for people to learn about why veganism is a good choice for
animals, people and the planet. Everyone can take part, whether
you are a long-time vegan or currently eating meat, by enjoying
discounted vegan meals at veg-friendly restaurants with your
friends or cooking some of Compassionate Cooks' delicious
recipes (visit http://www.WorldGoVeganDays.com for more information).

We also encourage animal advocates to use World GO VEGAN Days as
an opportunity to reach out to the general public. IDA's
powerful pro-vegan Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring
vegan bodybuilder Kenneth Williams is a great tool for educating
people on a large scale in your community about the horrors
animals endure on factory farms. In the 30-second spot, Kenneth
praises the health benefits of veganism while showing the
inhumane treatment that animals raised for meat, milk and eggs
experience every day. Click http://www.idausa.org/worldgovegandays.html
to view the PSA on your computer.

What You Can Do:

- Air IDA's PSA, "The Power of Compassion," on your local
television station. Visit http://www.idausa.org/vegandays/outreach.html
to learn how, and contact ida [at] idausa.org if you need assistance.

- Read IDA's new Vegan FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
( http://www.idausa.org/vegandays/faq.html ) and Vegan Quotations (URL
forthcoming?) on our World GO VEGAN Days website.

3. Gopher Gardening at Ocean Beach

Join the San Francisco Wildlife Protection Project, a joint
effort by IDA and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks
Department, to create a wildlife "sanctuary" along the Great
Highway. By landscaping the area according to the Parks
Department's specifications, volunteers create a habitat for
native gophers and prevent them from being trapped and killed.
This is an ongoing monthly effort, and usually takes place on
the first Saturday of each month.

What: Gopher Gardening at Ocean Beach
When: Saturday, November 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Where: Corner of the Great Highway and Wawona Street, San
Francisco, at the small brick Recreation and Park maintenance
building. Click http://tinyurl.com/4hnh2 for directions to this
event.

For more information, please contact IDA's Bay Area Coordinator
Karen Steele at (415) 388-9641, ext. 217 or karen [at] idausa.org .

4. Career Opportunities at IDA

If you love animals and want to make your living making their
lives better, then consider joining the IDA team as a full- or
part-time employee. IDA currently has several job openings we
are looking to fill with dedicated advocates who want to make a
real difference for the animals.

IDA's headquarters is located in beautiful Mill Valley, about 10
miles north of San Francisco in Marin County. If you want to
work for an organization that is dedicated to helping animals,
we'd love to hear from you. Please click
http://idausa.org/about/jobs.html for position descriptions and
qualifications and to apply. If you know someone who may be
interested in working for IDA, please forward this post on for
his or her consideration.

OTHER BAY AREA EVENTS TO HELP ANIMALS

1. Humane Law Investigator Presents Foster Farms Cruelty Video

Christine Morrissey, founder of East Bay Animal Advocates, has
experienced firsthand how chickens in a Foster Farms growout
house live. Approximately 20,000 birds are packed into each one,
and they are forced to stand on accumulated fecal waste and
breathe in dust and ammonia fumes. It's hard to describe or
imagine, so Christine got it all on video. Applying what she
learned from training to be a Humane Officer, Christine
documented the confinement, crippling leg deformities and
violations of California cruelty statutes taking place inside.
Of the thousands of birds trapped in the shed, she rescued 39
and ushered them off to safety.

What You Can Do

Attend a special talk by Christine and a screening of a short
video investigation that shows how Foster Farms harms the
intelligent, sensitive creatures known as chickens.

What: Talk and video presentation: "Fostering Cruelty in Chicken
Production"
When: Wednesday, October 26th starting at 7:00 p.m.
Where: 200 Wheeler Hall on the UC Berkeley campus (click
http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/CD34.html for driving directions and a
campus map)

This is a free event sponsored by the Berkeley Organization for
Animal Advocacy (BOAA) ( http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~boaa ). For more
information, email info [at] eastbayanimaladvocates.org or call (925)

3. Foster Homes Needed for Dogs Rescued from New Orleans

Rocket Dog Rescue, a 501c3 non-profit shelter dog rescue in San
Francisco, is receiving groups of dogs from New Orleans who need
temporary foster homes NOW! The number of dogs being rescued
from the Big Easy is immense, and many are already being
euthanized for lack of homes and resources to care for them, so
time is of the essence. The more foster homes that can be found
for these dogs in the Bay Area, the more lives can be saved.

What You Can Do

If you would like to foster a dog rescued from the devastation
of Hurricane Katrina, please write to
RocketDogKatrinaFoster [at] yahoo.com . However, if you are
considering being a foster guardian, there are a few conditions
to keep in mind:

- You must commit to providing a foster home for a dog for at
least one month. After that time, foster guardians will be given
the first option to adopt dogs that are not claimed by their
guardians.

- Please be aware that these dogs have been through a traumatic
experience, and Rocket Dog Rescue does not know their
temperaments and personalities very well. Once you commit to
fostering a dog, Rocket Dog Rescue cannot take him or her back.
Foster guardians need to be willing to work through any
behavioral issues with rescued dogs.

- When you email Rocket Dog Rescue, please list what size and
activity level of dog you
are willing to foster. Homes are mainly needed for large dogs,
as well as lots of very sweet pit bulls, but smaller dogs of
other breeds also need foster homes.

If you would like be an essential part of this life-saving
operation, please contact Rocket Dog Rescue as soon as you know
you can foster a dog. You can begin by filling out the foster
home guidelines, responsibilities and liability release at
http://www.rocketdogrescue.org/pages/fosterguidenew.pdf and the foster
home questionnaire at
http://www.rocketdogrescue.org/pages/fosterquest.pdf . To learn more
about Rocket Dog Rescue, please visit http://www.rocketdogrescue.org .
