downtown Berkeley BART; on 51, 40, 40L, 7 AC Transit lines)

In a coup d'etat on February 29, 2004, the United States overthrew Haiti's democratically elected government. The ruling coup government has killed countless supporters of the popular Fanmi Lavalas Party in numerous assaults on poor neighborhoods. It has arrested many Lavalas leaders, imprisoning them under harsh conditions with no charges filed.

This evening's program will be an opportunity to learn about work in support of human rights in Haiti, and how Haiti's history and current events exemplify the proliferating spread of U.S. Empire.

Suggested donation $15 - 50.
No one turned away for lack of funds.

Advance Reservations Requested.

Mario Joseph, Haiti's most prominent human rights lawyer, has led the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti since 1996. Attorney Joseph and the BAI represent political prisoners -- over 60 in the past year. The BAI also represents victims of police abuse and their families, and helps investigate and document human rights violations.

Brian Concannon Jr., human rights lawyer and activist, directs the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH), which promotes human rights in Haiti by litigating cases in Haitian, U.S. and international courts, documenting human rights violations and working with grassroots activists in Haiti, North America and throughout the world.
