Alameda Labor Council Endorses Rally On Dec1 For Rosa Parks,
Against The Iraq War & In Support Of Korean General Strike

A resolution introduced by ILWU Local 10 delegate Jack Heyman to support the
rally called by their local passed unanimously at the 11/21/2005 Alameda
Labor Council Meeting.
The rally-Stop Work Meeting will be held at Port View Park in the Port Of
Oakland and the end of
7th St. on Thursday December 1, 2005 at 10:00 AM.

The resolution calls for support rally around the following issues.

1) As part of a national stopwork day to pay homage to Rosa Parks for her
action that inspired the civil rights movement;

2) To demand an end to the war in Iraq and withdraw the troops NOW;

3) To act in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in South Korea who are
organizing a general strike Dec. 1 to protest the exploitation of casual
labor, which is forced to work under substandard conditions and wages with
no social benefits.

On Monday November 14, 2005, the San Francisco Labor Council AFL-CIO
unanimously voted to support the call of the Korean Confederation of Trade
Unions (KCTU) for a general
strike against casualization and part time temporary work. The resolution
follows:

Resolution In Support Of The November 28, 2005 Korean General Strike
Called By The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions KCTU

Whereas, the issue of contracting out, temporary work and the casualization
of the workforce is a growing problem for all working people and,

Whereas, the need for education and action on this issue is necessary to
combat this serious problem in society and,

Whereas, in South Korea, 56% of all workers are now temporary and/or part
time. And in the United States, the number of part time, temporary, casual,
contract workers as of 2004 is 43.9 million. Together this number combined
with workers who are official/unofficially unemployed in the US amounts to
more than 60 million. This means that 40% of the employed workforce of
about 132 million workers in the US now face permanent temporary, part
time work situations and most are without healthcare and pensions and ,

Whereas, there is an epidemic of contracting out and the expansion of
temporary/part time work in healthcare, transportation, retail services,
public services, education, hotel, food industry and,

Whereas, the threat of casual temporary/part time workers threatens the
stability of all permanent full time workers and their conditions and
benefits and,

Whereas, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions which represents over
600,000 workers in South Korea has called for the launching of a general
strike against casualization and for the protection of all temporary and
part time workers on November 28, 2005,

Therefore be it resolved, the San Francisco Labor Council will publicize
this action and will send support letters and greetings to the KCTU along
with supporting their action, and this council congratulates the KCTU for
taking the initiative in launching a national campaign against this growing
worldwide cancer and,

Finally this council will take action to protest any repression or jailing
of trade unionists who take part in this action and will convey our views in
a delegation to the South Korean Consulate in San Francisco.

Introduced by AFT 2121 Delegate Roger Scott and passed by the council.
