Organic Sacramento New Year's Update!

by Dan Bacher (danielbacher [at] hotmail.com)
Here's the latest information on the upcoming activities of Organic Sacramento from Kim Glazzard. The first Organic Sacramento meeting of 2006 will take place on Monday, January 2 at 6:30 pm at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op deli cafeteria area at Alhambra and S Streets in Sacramento. I hope to see you there!
Just a (what was going to be quick) note to update you on some of the many
things going on right now. First of all, our next Organic Sacramento
meeting will be this Monday, January 2, 2006 at 6:30 at the Sacramento
Natural Foods Co-op deli cafeteria area at Alhambra and S Streets. (I
apologize because this might be a holiday for some people, but we are
trying to stay consistent with meeting the first Monday of the month as
much as possible.) We would like to do some strategizing about what
options there are for Organic Sacramento (OS) during the next few months
and next year. (There are some wonderful potential opportunities as well
as some likely major challenges !!)

Sacramento’s Earth Day Committee met in the middle of December and decided
that they are going to go ahead and resume the annual Earth Day
celebrations, beginning this year (April 22, 2006). (They worked it out
so it can be held at CSUS again !!!) Instead of just the one group
organizing the event, they would like to make it a community effort, so
they are asking different community groups to participate in the
organizing. It is possible that the groups might even share in some of
the profits, if there are any. It is being requested that 1-2 key members
of different community organizations attend the next Earth Day Revival
Meeting, on Wednesday, January 11, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at the Shepard Garden
and Arts Center in McKinley Park at 3330 McKinley Blvd. Please let any
other community organizations you belong to know about this meeting, so as
many groups as possible can be involved. The theme this year will be
“Sustainable Sacramento,” so it should be an absolutely wonderful
opportunity to build support for a sustainable future in Sacramento. If
there are further questions or additional information is needed, please
contact Paul Barth at pathfinder [at] omsoft.com.

Working with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District
(SYMVCD) is still one of Organic Sacramento’s priorities in an attempt to
mitigate and/or prevent any further activities such as were seen last year
where the SYMVCD took it on themselves to spray pesticides over all of
Sacramento and some of Yolo Counties, in response to a supposed West Nile
Virus threat. OS is attempting to work with the District to try to get
the District’s response plan modified in order to totally eliminate, or at
least diminish, blanket pesticide spraying in urban areas as a
possibility. We do need help doing this (particularly we are trying to
reach our local elected officials, etc.) though, and Eve Bowers, one of
the young mothers who helped to work on this effort during the summer, has
offered to help coordinate these efforts. There are additional details
below, for those who can, and may be willing to, help. (Unfortunately,
this situation is not going to “go away” without quite a bit of additional
effort. Dave Brown, Manager of the SYMVCD, has set the stage in some
recent newspaper articles, to resume the pesticide spraying next year.
And, apparently, he intends to spray Davis as well.) Now is the time to
mitigate the situation, and not wait until the crisis situation repeats
itself !!

Below also is information, per the Organic Consumer’s Association, about a
proposition by the Bureau of Land Management to do massive application of
herbicides over large areas of public lands. The public comment period
ends on January 9, 2006. Also, Ruza Bogdanovich, ND, an
internationally renowned lecturer, a consultant on living nutrition,
natural healing and healthy living, and author of "THE CURE IS IN THE
CAUSE,” will be in Sacramento next week giving two lectures – one on
Thursday, January 5 and one on January 6. Both lectures will be begin at
6:30 p.m. See below for additional details.

I hope this doesn’t overwhelm everyone, and I hope everyone has a
wonderful (and safe!) New Year’s weekend !!! (And don’t forget our OS
meeting next Monday night!)

Kim

HELP NEEDED TO STOP ADDITIONAL PESTICIDE SPRAYING FOR WEST NILE VIRUS !!!

Organic Sacramento and other concerned groups have been working to change
our area's mosquito control plan in order to prevent the kind of
widespread pesticide spraying so many of us experienced last summer. In
order to effectively influence our mosquito control district, volunteers
are needed to be contacts for their city council members, county
supervisors and mosquito control district board representatives. The
commitment would involve contacting your elected officials and board
representative a few times each month regarding critical issues
surrounding spraying for West Nile Virus and reporting back on your
activities and any information you receive. This information will allow
us to pin down the positions of our elected officials and SYMVCD Board
representatives. Also, the District has a history of downplaying the
public's response to their actions, and they are currently claiming that
"nobody cares" about the issue in a seeming attempt to justify canceling a
series of public input workshops. Having information about who has
actually contacted the district will allow us to reveal the discrepancy in
those claims. Contact Eve Bowers at bowerseve [at] yahoo.com if you are able
to help. Thank you !!

TELL BLM NO MASS HERBICIDE APPLICATIONS, DEADLINE 1/9/06

From the Organic Consumers Association:
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed to apply massive amounts
of herbicides to public lands in 17 Western states. The BLM claims these
pesticides need to be applied to forests, rangelands and aquatic areas in
order to reduce the risk of fire and slow the spread of invasive weeds.

Under the proposal 932,000 acres would undergo chemical application in 17
western states, including National Monuments and National Conservation
areas. An integral part of this proposal involves aerial spraying of toxic
herbicides, which increases negative impacts on non-targeted vegetation,
wildlife, and people, including recreationists, tourists, and native
peoples. The pesticides that would be used include persistent and mobile
chemicals, including known developmental and reproductive toxins.

Public comments are being accepted until January 9, 2006. Sign the
petition here to support managing vegetation on our public lands with
traditional methods that do not require widespread application of toxic
chemicals.

Petition and more information on this issue is available here:

Please also forward this message to interested friends and colleagues.
