environmental hazards: It’s all about our kids

by Bay View (reposted)
Angel is only 10 years old, but she knows that the job of ridding our community of environmental hazards is ours to do. Each month, the SF Bay View and Greenaction will print stories written by our youth. It is time that we listen to the young people and let them educate us. Get on the frontlines with our youth.
One of the most troubling things in my life keeps coming back to haunt me, and I don’t know what I did to make it keep happening to me.

My name is Angel Tobias. I am 10 years old, and I was born in Bayview Hunters Point. I live right next to the PG&E power plant. I can’t breathe good most of the time, and I need to take medicine that my doctor gives me.

One night before Christmas, it was hard to sleep and I couldn’t breathe right or sleep. I was so scared I asked my Granny if I was going to die. She sat up with me for most of the night because I didn’t want to be alone.

I want everyone to know that I am not the only one, because almost everyone I know has at least two inhalers, just like me. But I still have to take another medicine just so I can sleep.

My Granny and some of the other moms who live in Hunters View are working with Greenaction and Marie Harrison to shut down the power plant. They believe that if we don’t start now to clean up the air, no one else will. I like going to the rallies and demanding that PG&E shut down.
