FIRST-YEAR STUDENT ERIKA CARLSEN TELLS WHY SHE IS SUPPORTING THE FAST
University of San Francisco students are participating in a political fast to show their solidarity and to take a stand against the unjust, and racist anti-immigration legislation that seeks to criminalize, alienate, and dehumanize a central part of our community.
We are chosing to do this because:
• As children and allies of immigrants, we are appalled that our government is denying fundamental human rights of our family members and friends who are not recognized as documented members of our community.
• As students of the University of San Francisco, we are obligated to remind our community and our nation that we do not support anti-immigrant attitudes or policies.
• We are one percent of the privileged population with a college education. It is our responsibility to respond and act against the adversities that are placed upon the marginalized communities of our society.
• We continue to promote our University’s principles of social justice by educating our hearts and minds to increase awareness and inspire mobilization against injustices and inequalities in our nation
The strike has now been going on for over 50 hours and will continue until friday at 7pm. All 9 fasters are in good health and have high spirits which continue to talk to one student after another, spreading their fervor and knowlege to many more.
