Tenderloin Parking Lot Gets New Lease On Life
For two years, the parking lot at 163 Eddy Street has been plagued by an increasing amount of violence, drugs, prostitution, and public urination. These problems affect nearby SRO residents in the hotels that border the area, and the neighborhood residents have organized to do something about it. But on April 1st, the parking lot – located between Mason and Taylor – will have a new lessee. And hopefully, the new management will result in better upkeep for the benefit of the community.
The most pressing problem has always been the smell. The urine stench is so strong that it hits passersby before they even see the parking lot. At night, the lot is used for drug sales and drug use. Residents from the nearby SRO hotels are frequently awakened by screaming and yelling coming from people drinking in the parking lot. People have also reported incidents of prostitution.
But the holders of the current lease – which expires at the end of the month – have started implementing changes. Two weeks ago, bright lights were installed to illuminate the parking lot at night. “I’ve already noticed a difference in the activity there,” said Bob Abote, a resident of the Empress Hotel. “They had lights before, but they were inconsistent. You didn’t know whether or not they would be on or stay on. This has been much better.”
“There are four liquor stores on this block, but no public bathrooms,” said Ray Boscacci, a resident of the West Hotel. “There are no bathrooms at all in the Tenderloin. People use this parking lot as well as other places. I see them doing it all the time.”
A new fence with barbed wire has also been put in place along the front of the parking lot, which is supposed to be shut overnight. As part of the contract with the new lessee, a daytime attendant will also be present.
