SECOND MAY DAY ANNIVERSARY FOR IMMIGRANTS’ RIGHTS

Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants calls Pittsburghers to join in solidarity
with all immigrant workers on May Day, May 1, 2007

Pittsburgh, PA – In commemoration with International Workers' Day for
Immigrants' Rights, Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants prepares local action
and invites Western Pennsylvania immigrants' supporters to come to
Pittsburgh and join this national movement for justice.

At 4pm on May 1, 2007, immigrants’ rights advocates will hold a vigil in
front of Allegheny County Jail at 950 2nd Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh.
The vigil will honor immigrant families, documented and undocumented, who
were cruelly separated from each other at their homes and worksites by
raids organized by the Immigrant Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency of
the Department of Homeland Security. Once again PFOI feels compelled to
gather in honor of immigrant detainees’ dignities -- whose only crime was
to work to feed their families.

After the vigil, at 5pm, a march will begin from the Jail through the
sidewalks of downtown Pittsburgh in solidarity with immigrant workers in
the United States. The march will end across from Senator Specter’s office
at Mellon Square Park.

May Day in Pittsburgh is being organized by Pittsburgh Friends of
Immigrants (PFOI), a grassroots organization of Pittsburgh residents
advocating for immigrants’ rights and “true” immigration reform. We
advocate for amnesty and legalization for all undocumented immigrants and
a moratorium on raids and deportations. We march for a legislation that
protects undocumented immigrants in Pittsburgh. We march in solidarity
with the Great American Boycott II, a nationwide action for immigrants’
rights.

WHO: Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants
WHEN: May 1, 2007, at 4:00 p.m.
WHERE: The vigil will start in front of the Allegheny County Jail on 2nd
Ave. The march will start from the same location. We will then walk to
Senator Specter’s office.

BOSTON MAY DAY COALITION CALL TO ACTION FOR MAY 1, 2007: The Great
American Boycott 2007 - El Gran Paro Americano 2007 From coast to coast,
north and south, and beyond our borders, a cry for full legal rights from the
immigrant community was heard—throughout the spring of 2006. The cry for
justice, dignity, and respect for the millions of undocumented workers was
broadly supported because all of us deserve nothing less than full rights.
Anti-immigrant politicians and hate mongers say: "Immigrants are a drain on
society”. Immigrants contribute $7 billion in social security per year, earn
$240 billion, pay $90 billion in taxes, and are only reimbursed $5 billion.
Who gets the other $85 billion? Immigrants also contribute to the U.S. economy
$25 billion more than received in healthcare, etc., etc. What about the
hundreds of billions spent on the war in Iraq?

Millions of immigrants have spoken and millions more understand that: “We are
workers, not criminals!” And after all who is not a descendent of immigrants? As
working people we all face similar problems and the solutions lie in building
unity. Division and scapegoating gets us nowhere. It only draws us into a race to
the bottom. Let us all stand together demanding jobs for all, a livable wage,
affordable housing, health care, childcare, education, and other vital needs.
We stayed home from work and school. Over two million of us turned out in the
streets. Thousands of shops closed. Millions refused to buy— May 1st 2006. May
1st, 2007 is approaching. This time let’s turn out many more and again place our
stamp on the intensifying debate. This is the only language that is understood in
Washington. Let the nation hear our voice. Let our mass call for immediate
legalization be heard around the world. From the land where May Day was born
we call on our sisters and
brothers worldwide and ask you to stand together with us in an international
campaign defending the rights of the 200 million migrant workers worldwide. We ask
working people worldwide to extend your hands in our direction and to add your
voices to ours in a celebration of solidarity. This year let International Workers
Day be “the day of the migrant worker”— a day when working people came together to
say: “United we stand, divided we fall. An injury to one is an injury to all.” Let
this year bring us a step closer to recovering May Day as our national Labor Day as
it is celebrated by millions worldwide commemorating the May 1st, 1886 mass strike
for the 8-hour day. Join us May 1st for the “Great National Boycott 2007”. We
ask family, friends, and neighbors to join together. We call on all who stand for
justice to stand together with us in unity and strength— a day without an
immigrant— a day for all who seek justice. Together we can change the face of
politics.
Together we can again make history. Join us May 1st: No Work, No School, No Buying,
and No Selling.
Stop the raids and deportations!
No guest workers program!
Full legalization for all undocumented workers and their families, now!

A iniciativa
(*210 Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Boulevard)*

To the community!
The Immigrant Workers Union (IWU) and many other organizations are
organizing a March. The March will begin at the Capitol May 1st at 12:00
pm. The event is part of the series of demonstrations in a around the
country asking for reform, a reform that offers a solution to all immigrants
in the nation. In Wisconsin, there will be various marches; all including in
the demands stopping the new driver licenses law.

Besides the marches, National pro immigrant organizations have called for a
National Boycott in May 1st. The boycott consists of not working, not
buying, not selling, or going to school. The boycott demonstrates that we
are a vital part in labor and economic in this country.

In Madison, we celebrate May 1st by marching from the Capitol towards
Brittingham Park. At the park, there will be a celebration with food, drink,
and information supporting the struggle for our rights.

This year is the 130th anniversary of the strike in Chicago that obtained an
8 hour working day. Since then, most countries in the world celebrate May 1
st as International Workers Day. This Thursday, Dane County Board will vote
a resolution, sponsored by IWU and county supervisor Ashok Kumar, in order
to recognize May 1st and asking for employers to allow workers to take the
day off to participate in the festivities. The vote will take place this
Thursday April 19th at 7pm in Room 201 at the City County Building. (210

MAY DAY 2007
MARCH FOR WORKERS' RIGHTS: SOLIDARITY WITH ALL IMMIGRANT, MIGRANT &
UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS!

Immigrant rights are worker's rights: Justice for All!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TUESDAY, MAY 1
Gather at 6pm at Clark Park @ Commercial Drive and 14th Avenue
(close to Broadway Skytrain)
March to Grandview Park for gathering @ 7:30 pm
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

==> Family-friendly march
==> There will be food, water and snacks during the demo.
==> Rest vehicles will accompany the march.

With imperialist globalization, workers in Canada are facing undeniable
attacks. Hard-won wages, benefits and social services are now being
cruelly eroded as Canada joins other imperialist countries in forcing
increased labour flexibility in the name of ‘free trade’ and the
neo-liberal agenda. Even workers’ solidarity is being criminalized and the
right for workers to unionize or to fight for their legitimate rights is
under attack.

Even more vulnerable and attacked are Canada’s immigrant, migrant, and
undocumented workers whose numbers in Canada are increasing and whose
exploitation is intensifying. Canada has always used migrant and immigrant
labour to fill its relentless demand for cheap labour, but now, under the
deepening crisis of imperialism and its never-ending pursuit for private
profit, there is a renewed push in the country to bring in a greater
number of cheaper, mobile, and flexible migrant labour. This push towards
cheaper more mobile migrant labour is clearly evident in the Canadian
state’s thrust to expand the country’s Temporary Foreign Workers Program.

This May Day, we will also be joining migrants, refugees and their allies
across Canada who will again demonstrate against the deportation and
detention of migrants and refugees, for a full, inclusive, unconditional
and ongoing regularization program, and for full rights and dignity for
immigrant communities against racism, poverty, and criminalization. Our
march on May Day coincides with marches in the US as we collectively
assert that immigrant rights are workers rights.

Hundreds of thousands of people live without status, without sufficient
access to health care or education, and in great fear of being detained or
deported, all the while being the most exploited in the workplace. For
decades immigrants have been scapegoated, and now since 9/11, the false
link between immigrants and terrorism has developed. Thousands of
migrants, especially immigrant women, are forced to live in poverty; while
thousands of temporary workers perform hard and dangerous labour, yet are
denied their basic rights.

Join us this May Day, as we join with workers around the world in
celebrating the militant tradition of May 1 as a day to oppose the
exploitation and oppression of workers. We are coming together as workers
in our various communities to expose the harsh impact of neo-liberalism
upon Canadian workers. We also are continuing the courageous struggle of
immigrants and migrants in North America for their full rights anddignity.

and undocumented workers in Canada!
