Walk for life/Hot Rods

by Petra
There is a predictable yearly cycle of events that happens around the boardwalk in Santa Cruz - lots of different bicycle and running road races, the marching band convention, and various music and holiday events. Two weeks after the Sentinel triathlon comes the Saturday with the Walk for Life walkathon, and Hot Rods at the Beach, sponsored by the local police department.

The Walk for Life walkathon seems to go along West Cliff Drive, and ends in the shrine of St. Joseph parking lot near Cowell's beach. Various mixed-race families walked up and down the path with lots of strollers. This was a benefit for their Pregnancy Resource Center on Soquel Drive.

Hot Rods at the Beach is another long-standing Santa Cruz tradition. The day started with a pancake breakfast operating as a fundraiser for the police officer association, with turkey legs and garlic fries. Dozens of interesting classic cars cruised the neighborhood, and converged on the large beach parking lot. Many families clearly devote lots of energy to their project car, and were having fun visiting and meeting other enthusiasts.
A Los Angeles police officer has a hot-rod car that he funds through private donations, and runs at raceways in order to help keep kids off drugs. Last year I stayed for the demo where he poured nitro into the air intake and made it run really loud, but this year I didn't have time.
The Santa Cruz had a very brief police dog demonstration, where they showed off one of their shepherds. This lasted about two minutes so it couldn't be easily photographed, and they demonstrated how the dog is under voice control and will stop biting the british man with a padded coat when they call him down. They did not do the exercise from last year where they invited kids to stand nearby the 'criminal', showing that the dog can be directed towards the target without being a risk to bystanders.

Hot Rods at the beach runs through Sunday

There were about 8-10 historic versions of California police cars that we mostly recognize from the many movies and TV shows (CHiPs) done in California

of either of these reactionary events. One, the "walk for Life" justiefies the Catholic church's wanting to remove the rightsand freedoms that a women has over her body and her choice of whether tp have children or not. And the other one is apropaganda ploy for the brutal police statewe all live under.

No. No protesters. I didn't say a thing. Maybe everyone was at fleet week.

The San Francisco Walk for Life is coming up soon, and they bring in lots of teenagers and invite confrontation http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2006/01/21/17970261.php

Actually, here is the date of the San Francisco face-off. I guess they will be doing this each year? It's Embarcadero to Marina green again. http://www.walkforlifewc.com/event.htm My cousin living in southern Indiana just had her 4th baby at age 23 this week, and she pretty much needed the opposite counseling, won't be able to fit them in a stroller etc.

The police set off smiling in those historical vehicles, sirens on, and drove around west Santa Cruz, followed by a bunch of old Chevy's, dodge chargers, and Ford Fairlanes. The sensation was deja vu because last year there were the same classic cars and dogs, and ran into the diminutive Walk for life on the way

Check out http://www.sisterzeus.com for information on how to control your fertility at home. Also google menstrual extraction and learn how to form a self help group of trusted women to safely remove your period if it doesnt occur on time and if you suspect you are pregnant. The egg will be safely expelled before its a fetus. Nurses and midwives can teach this.

Its also good for getting over your period in a half hour if you are going camping, competing in athletic events etc.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
