SF Japan Consulate Site of Today's, Previous Demos
The Japanese consulate in San Francisco is the site of political/environmental demonstrations several times a year.
Today activists demonstrated against Japan's harassment and detention of protesters at the recent G8 Summit hosted by that country.
Last year activists dressed as dolphins came to 50 Fremont St. to protest Japan's fishing practices. Feminists and supporters have also demonstrated against the Japanese practice of kidnapping and holding in slavery "comfort women" (sex slaves) during WWII and the pre-war colonial period. Most of these sex slaves were held in Japanese occupied Korea, while others were nationals of the Philippines and China.

Notably, no national flag is displayed in front of the consulate at 50 Fremont St.

are these photos meant to imply that "The Japanese are Undercover in America?"
Missed the demo cuz the protesters showed up later than the posted time.
Things were so quiet....eerily so. And how come the Japanese display no flag?
Obviously they wish to keep a low profile to discourage unwanted attention.
They motorcycles parked in front are just a coincidence but tell a story...We buy all their motorized vehicles but they severely restrict import of US rice into their country to protect their own farmers.
With no one home at the consulate on a Saturday....no, did not mean to imply that there are Japanese spies racing around on those vehicles (though they do, like many countries, have industrial spies in the US, a common practice in the cut throat corporate world)
The message here is not meant to be anti-Japan, but anti globalization in the sense of anti corporate rule
