Free Radio Santa Cruz Evicted!

by Uncle Dennis
Free Radio has been evicted and needs a new home.
Free Radio Santa Cruz has had their transmitter evicted. The landlord has given us word that the transmitter has to go - and soon.

Free Radio Santa Cruz has been on the air for over 15 years, but not without having to move from time to time. This is the downside of being an unlicensed, DIY, pirate radio station.

The Federal Communications Commission plays dirty. They find out who our landlord is and write them a letter saying that if they don't throw us out then the landlord could lose their property. The fact hat no landlord has ever lost a property because there was a pirate station on the property isn't written in the letter. The letter is terrorism - and it works. This is the cheapest way the FCC has to put pressure on independent media. It only costs them postage to hassle Free Radio.

Some landlords have ignored these letters and recognized them for what they are - intimidation. But Free Radio transmitter's current landlord is playing along. So we need a new transmitter location ASAP.

Here's how you can help. Free Radio needs a spot on the westside, northside or eastside (not downtown) that has a roof or a tall tree for our transmitting antenna, the higher up the better. Our transmitter needs a locked, dry space with electricity, access for our engineers and access to the internet.

Free Radio offers an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for the internet access and router, up to $50 per month for the electricity used, and counseling on what to do when the FCC comes knocking. Normally, the transmitter requires very little maintenance, so we won't be coming by very often.

If you can host Free Radio's transmitter for at least 6 months, please let us know. Send email to frsc [at] freakradio.org or call our voicemail at 427-4523

It would be a massive loss for SC if FRSC was not able to find a new location for their antenna. I have supported FRSC through donations for years. I do not live in the right for your needs, but will spread the word. I hope someone steps up soon.

Is FRSC still around? The station on the old frequency now appears to be a Mexican station. What are the new frequency numbers for FRSC? Did one of the Mexican stations out of Salinas claim the numbers?
by Learn Spanish
no, the old frequency is not a "Mexican" station, but Free Radio does offer plenty of Spanish-language programming, including news, interviews, excellent music, etcetera. I think this is one of the best ways to bridge the gap between the Spanish and English speaking communities.
by But I like Mexican Radio too!
Origninally it was 89.3, then it was 96.3 until the freakin' Christian AIR ONE got a license for that signal so FRSC switched to 101.1. It has been there ever since the raid in 2004. Way to pay attention to the dial....

FRSC actually has *excellent* programming for a microradio station. A while back, they were rebroadcasting some of the music shows on the Berkeley station, and I was amazed by the really good world music I was being newly exposed to. It beats the NPR station content for some markets, and a lot of AM talk stations..
FRSC has Spanish Blocks of programing and their schedule is posted online, although sometimes slightly outdated as hosts and shows switch, added or move on. I am a listener not a host. I know this because I LISTEN. I do not speak Spanish. I wish I did. I love FRSC programing considering it's a community collective run station, funded by donations and by the hosts themselves, owned by nobody, operates without a licence. Either your confused very easily, or your starting a debate that does not belong here and has already occurred. If that is your motive I respectively suggest you start a new thread and debate it there.

Sometimes FRSC has Spanish on, other times they do not. We have a large Spanish speaking population so I think its appropriate they have Spanish news and music, and hosts. I believe it is a good thing for one reason --It is simply a reflection of our community, since anyone can apply to be in the collective and have there own show. You can find news that you will not hear anywhere else, ample music of all sorts and all for free. So tune or tune out. This is not a debate about Spanish content, it is a call to the community for help.

I really hope someone comes through. I am calling everyone I know who lives in that area. If you like FRSC, try and help too.

YO, I love Freakradio! especially the Brown Beret Radio! If i lived in Santa Cruz, i would definitely be helping to seek a location for them. i encourage any that read this to help them as well as build. one day they should be funded to go main stream... with no co opted media sell out mainstream influence or special interest!
I was inspired enough to take the beginning steps to bring something like that similarly to Sacramento... the people need a voice and Freak Radio offered that. much love and respect for a 15 year run, i hope y'all find a good spot for another strong 15+
Keep up the good work and thank you Indybay for keepin it 100.
many blessings.
peace
