United States to host 2011 Press Freedom Day, May 1-3 in Washington D.C.
Bozeman, MT, March 2 (ECM)--The United States will host UNESCO's World Press Freedom Day at Washington's expensive intimidating ultra-high security complex the Newseum May 1-3. John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is the leading funder of the event which is also supported by private corporate donations. The Knight Foundation has offered $125,000 in matching donations to underwrite the event.
At the event the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize will be bestowed on some lucky journalist. On May 4 a special event will take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration.
UNESCO in a bizarre ironical has asked journalists and all those who support press freedom to observe 'a minute of silence' in memory of journalists who have given their lives "for our right to be informed," instead of asking us to do what we do best and speak-out.
Neither UNESCO nor the NAtional Press Club recognize violations of press freedoms in the United States.
