Apple Profits Record High...Still Abusing Workers in China
Third time's the charm! The Raging Grannies at the Apple store in Palo Alto CA, call for corporate responsibility at their third demonstration there.
Apple is twisting statistics to defend themselves because of all the recent news about their labor abuses in China. While profits are at a record high, Apple boasts that it has increased US jobs by around 500,000. Even if that is the case, it’s worth noting that all of these US jobs are well paid in comparison to assembly line jobs in China.
No one in the US would work under the conditions that the Chinese workers have to. By comparison Apple headquarters in Cupertino is one of the most desirable places to work in the world, say recent college grads entering the job market.
The president of a the Fair Labor Association, hired by Apple to inspect its suppliers’ factories, began praising the Chinese plants of Foxconn within days of beginning inspections there last month. This despite abusive conditions reported by well-documented sources including the New York Times and NPR. "Of course the Fair Labor Association itself is questionable because it is not really independent. It gets money from Apple and other companies it supposedly does 'unbiased' reporting for," said the Grannies.
