It's that time of year again and that means it's time for The Annual Cabrillo College Social Justice Conference at Cabrillo College!

We have an AMAZING event planned for the community on Saturday May 2nd 2015! This year our theme is 'Change Through Individual Action" to stress the importance we ALL play in making real, sustainable change in our own lives and in around the globe. We have Keynote speaker Danny Sheehan from the Romero Institute who will be talking about constitutional protection and indigenous people's rights, workshops and discussion forums with local nonprofits focusing on issues that range from racism, the justice system, prisons and solitary confinement, the environment, food right and more! Did we mention the free food? Because we will be serving a FREE MEAL to every attendee. Local musical and artistic talent will be featured throughout the day and for all you parents out there we will have a fully supervised kids area stocked with socially conscious activities and critical thinking exercises so you can enjoy the panels, workshops and performances and know your little one is safe and entertained!

THIS EVENT IS FREE TO ATTEND!

Oh yeah. There will be a raffle too!
We will be distributing raffle tickets to students over the next 2 weeks to be entered into a drawing to receive a $100 GIFT CARD TO THE CABRILLO BOOK STORE FOR TEXT BOOKS! We will also have other prizes and will be distributing raffle tickets to attendees as well so even if you aren't a student you can still win!

The event will take place on the VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) side of the campus and will run from 10am-4pm on Saturday May 2nd.

We have attached the poster for you AND we have included the Facebook event page for you to spread like wildfire on your social media networks! Also, you will find below the press release for the event to give you a background and more ideas about what we are doing.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON MAY 2ND!

PRESS RELEASE:
The 9th Annual Cabrillo College Social Justice Conference: “Change Through Individual Action’ at Cabrillo College, May 2nd 2015.

APTOS, CA — Cabrillo College announces that its widely acclaimed, ninth annual Social Justice Conference, entitled “Change Through Individual Action”, will be held at Cabrillo College Saturday, May 2nd 2015. Admission is free.

This year the conference features keynote speaker Daniel Sheehan from The Romero Institute. Daniel Sheehan is a Harvard College, Harvard Law School and Harvard Divinity School--trained Constitutional Litigation and Appellate Attorney. Over the past forty-four years, Dan's work as a Federal Civil Rights Attorney, Author, Public Speaker and College and Law School Educator has helped expose the structural sources of injustice in our country and around the world. He has protected the fundamental and inalienable rights of our world's citizens and has elucidated a compelling and inspiring vision for the future direction of our human family. Dan's dedication to this vision and his work have placed him at the center of many of the most important legal cases and social movements of our generation.

With the goal to attract a larger number of attendees from all different demographics, planners have implemented different features to help get you involved and make your experience interactive. This year the conference will offer three areas of activities. One focused on Panel discussions and the Keynote Speaker, one for workshops and discussion forums and another filled with nonprofit organizations from around the Santa Cruz area. There will also be musical performances and even some live acts from performing artists. “Not everyone wants to sit and listen to speeches all day,” remarked Dru Glover, head programmer for the event. “Acknowledging that is important. So, what we are going to do is offer an area of speeches, an area of panel discussions and workshops, an area for the nonprofits to talk to the community and an area for music, art and fun!”. For those with children, the planners haven’t forgotten about you either and will provide a free, fully supervised children’s area with arts, craft, reading and writing workshops for the little ones while you attend a speech, panel or discussion. The conference will also offer a free breakfast and a free light lunch (vegan and vegetarian options available) for everyone who attends.

In order to encourage even more community involvement, planners are also inviting non-profits in the Santa Cruz area to come out and distribute information. Some of the organizations who are confirmed to be there will include The Romero Institute, The United Nation Association of Santa Cruz, The Santa Cruz County Community Coalition to Overcome Racism, Sin Barras, the Santa Cruz NAACP, The Resource Center for Non Violence and The Clean Oceans Project among many others to showcase the work they are doing toward social justice.

The event begins with an opening reception at 10AM the morning of Saturday, May 2nd, which will feature a special morning musical performance and speech to launch everyone into the day.
