OAKLAND, CA – The Port of Oakland was shut down by its workers in protest of killings by police and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The fifth busiest container port in the U.S. was shut down for the day shift yesterday, May 1, by the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, Local 10. Union militants initiated a united front action with other community and labor groups which began with a rally at the Port at 9:00 AM. The ILWU Local 10 Drill Team led a march to downtown Oakland for a noontime rally in front of Oakland's City Hall. The march and rally attracted about 2,000 participants. The great majority of members of ILWU Local 10 are African Americans and other people of color. May 1st is May Day – International Workers Day - which is commemorated around the world with protests, parades, and celebrations.
