Proud of Our Mission Neighborhood
Our neighborhood comes together in support of the Galeria de la Raza and its LGBTQ mural
Proud of Our Mission Neighborhood
On July 1, nearly 900 of us came together in spirit, unity, and love to transform the unacceptable destruction of the mural on the outside wall of Galeria de La Raza. The mural installed by the Los Angeles Maricon Collective is a celebration of LGBTQ people, and accompanies the presentation in the Galeria, The Q-Sides. Supervisor David Campos and staff brought us together. He spoke of the pain this act caused him as a gay man who could not come out until he was 26 years old. Campos and every speaker emphasized how we must maintain the unity in the Mission and heal with love not revenge, even though this is a hate crime. Those who defaced this mural can step up, listen to the elders and learn about the lives of their LGBTQ neighbors. Trans man, Lucindo, spoke of the deep emotions, pain, and scars the mural image of the trans Latino man brought up inside.
Ani Rivera felt this as an attack on the entire neighborhood, especially Queer people of the Mission.
“Well, I’m here to tell you we have always existed, and we will continue to exist in the Mission and everywhere!” Ani called her staff to come up and expressed that they have concerns for security for the Galeria and themselves. Yet, she continued, “More than ever we must be united, we must exercise patience, and we must truly listen and respond to each other to reach a place of peace and reconciliation. ”
René Yañez, a founder of Galeria de la Raza, spoke its history and that the Galeria has always celebrated our differences and maintained our love for the Mission and one another.
Now as the Mission faces an onslaught of gentrification and increasing encroachment of luxury housing, we must stand together and hold the unity that has grown to challenge this takeover.
Petitions to place an initiative on the ballot for a moratorium on luxury building-No Monster in the Mission- were eagerly signed by people. There are still a few days, July 6th, left to gather signatures. Contact Plaza16.org
