Community forum regarding killing of Sean Arlt 11-1-2016
A lot of us in Santa Cruz turned out for an evening addressing the killing of Sean Arlt by Santa Cruz Police and how we can improve the distance that stands between the police and the community! The event was held at the Peace United Church in Santa Cruz Ca.!
Many spoke regarding their interactions with the Santa Cruz police! They also spoke of how the Santa Cruz County Sheriff has been working with the community regarding mental illness, the homeless, and other issues, while they feel the Santa Cruz. police department has not been working enough with the community on these issues! Most feel that the Santa Cruz police need to be held accountable and need more training when it comes to the mentally ill and homeless people! The chief feels the his department and his officers have better training than many other in the state! People also spoke regarding better mental health services, that we need so desperately! Some spoke regarding the lack of police support when they call for help, while others spoke of how fearful they are to call the police! They also spoke of how the police department needs to get the military out of there police forces! Many police department here and across the country are hiring officers that have had their training in the military!
