Women's safety on college campus (Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior college)

by Maxime Montoya
This is about the safety of women on the Sonoma State and Santa Rosa JC campuses and the suggestions that students and faculty have about what could be done to improve the safety of women on the campuses.
Students that attend Sonoma State University say that they feel unsafe at night after night classes finish. A SSU research group completed 300 surveys with female students on campus safety. The group has found that many students feel that at night they are afraid to walk alone because there are few lights and few cops around to protect them from potential crimes. In the past few months Sonoma State University has had a few sexual assaults happen on campus not to mention the ones that go unreported. Plus in light of recent events with the death of 18 year old young man who’s body was found on our campus has the students feeling a need for better protection. Many students and faculty feel that there is not enough being done on campus in regards to the safety of the students and faculty.

I personally agree with our survey results, and think walking around at night after 7pm is very dangerous because a lot of places on campus do not have enough lighting and there are not enough police around. I have talked to a couple of campus police and they have said they are changing things because we as students haven’t seen the changes being done. I think the parking lots of the Sonoma State University have to be improved with better lighting and more police walking around at night. My group has also given surveys out to female students and faculty at the Santa Rosa junior college and they are having the same problems as Sonoma State University. I strongly advocate for increased safety and lighting at SSU and SRJC.
