by repost
Former San Francisco Congressman Julius Kahn was an anti-Zionist and worked to stop the formation of a Jewish state. He was also anti-Asian but at the time the majority of Jews in the US were opposed to the ideology of Zionism and the formation of a Jewish state.

Julius Kahn (February 28, 1861 - December 18, 1924) immigrated from Germany to the United States with his parents in 1866. He was a Republican US Congressman 1899-1903 and 1904-1924. Julius Kahn presented an anti-Zionist petition signed by 31 prominent American Jews to President Woodrow Wilson as he was departing for the Paris Peace Conference (March 1919) (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Kahn and http://dissidentvoice.org/2009/09/is-it-anti-semitic-to-defend-palestinian-human-rights/ ).
Julius Kahn presented an anti-Zionist petition signed by 31 prominent American Jews to President Woodrow Wilson as he was departing for the Paris Peace Conference (March 1919). The petition was signed by 31 prominent American Jews. The signatories included Henry Morgenthau, Sr., ex-ambassador to Turkey; Simon W. Rosendale, ex-attorney general of New York; Mayor L. H. Kampner of Galveston, Texas; E. M. Baker, from Cleveland and president of the Stock Exchange; R. H. Macy’s Jesse I. Straus; New York Times publisher Adolph S. Ochs; and Judge M. C. Sloss of San Francisco. Part of the petition read: “…we protest against the political segregation of the Jews and the re-establishment in Palestine of a distinctively Jewish State as utterly opposed to the principles of democracy which it is the avowed purpose of the World’s Peace Conference to establish. Whether the Jews be regarded as a “race” or as a “religion,” it is contrary to the democratic principles for which the world war was waged to found a nation on either or both of these bases.” [1].

Washington. Jan. 29.—Julius Kahn of California is today, perhaps the leading Jew in American public life. Justice Louis D. Brandeis of the United States Supreme Court occupies a higher p og j. tion, but his connection with public affairs has not been so intimate nor so conspicuous as that of Congressman Kahn. He has been elected to serve his tenth term in the House, and of the Jews serving with him in that body he is easily the best known. Meyer London the New York Socialist member, will disappear from public life after March 4th; Representative Milton Kraus of Indiana is finishing his first term; Isaac Bacharach of New Jersey is his senior by only two years; Isaac Siegel represents one of the East Side districts of New York, and Representative Adolph J. Sabath of Chicago, although one of the able men of the House, is not as well known as Mr. Kahn, whose fame now extends from coast to coast. As the champion of the selective draft, as an orator of unusual talents, as a student and thinker, he has made his impress on the Congress and on the country. As a German-born Jew of the highest Americanism, he has appealed to the imagination of the Nation. The future has higher honors in store for him; should a Republican succeed Mr. Wilson in the White House. Julius Kahn would naturally be regarded as extraordinarily well fittewish faith of these two nations could ever succeed. I doubt whether they could maintain a country or an organized government such as one would expect from a modern state —one that would comport with high modern ideals. Besides, the trend of all countries to separate Church and State has proved that it is wise for governments to maintain such a separation —where as the proposal of the Zionists is in the other direction, to consolidate Church and State in the new homeland of the Jews. It is contrary to the conception of those Jews who have become thoroughly Americanized, who believe in American institutions and who would not, under any circumstances, consent to a union of the spiritual and the political authorities.” Jews Opposed to Zionism Mr. Kahn voiced restrained criticism of President Wilson’s attitude toward the subject. “I regret that the President has seen fit to come out openly in favor of the Jewish state proposed by some of the English statesmen,” he said. “I believe that if he had consulted the views of those members of the Jewish faith who have lived in the United States for many years he would have found that an over; whelming majority of them is opposed to Zionism. My observation convinces me that the vast majority of those who in this country approve Zionism is composed of those who have come to the United

States since 1881, driven as they were to this land of freedom to escape the oppressions that were visited upon them in Russia, Rumania, Poland and elsewhere; the abolition of the ghettos everywhere, and that they establish the freedom of residence anywhere in ail the countries of the world.” He left a patriotic, thought in conclusion. "We have just eliminated hyphenism in the United States,” he said. "Thank God for it? We no longer have the German-American, the Irish-Ameri-can, the French-American, any other diluted type of American. And what is Zionism endeavoring to do? Create a new form of hyphenism, the Palestinian-American. to displace the American Jew by the Jewish-American. We want no such thing. For me the United States is my Zion and San Francisco is my Jerusalem. And if I have to make a choice» between my country and my Judaism, that choice is not difficult. I should stand firmly and forever for my country —America, the land of the free.”
