Santa Cruz Community Update: Postponement of the Santa Cruz Cookout

Santa Cruz, CA – In our continuous pursuit to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of our community through the annual Santa Cruz Cookout, our foremost priority remains the health and wellbeing of all participants and the broader community we serve. It is with a deep sense of responsibility and care that I, Ayo Banjo, Head Organizer of the Santa Cruz Cookout in collaboration with Black Health Matters Initiative, announce the postponement of this year's event, originally scheduled for Saturday at Harvey West Park.

This decision comes in light of a recent report by the City of Santa Cruz detailing a highly infectious Shingella Bacteria Outbreak within the park, attributed to the encampments. The safety of our community is paramount, and it is upon this principle that we must act to prevent any potential health risks that could arise from gathering at the affected location.

Understanding the gravity of this situation, I have actively encouraged the City Parks and Recreation Department to embark on developing a Marketing and Communications strategy aimed at crafting public information and awareness campaigns to educate our community about the health hazards posed by the Shingella Bacteria outbreak. It is crucial that every member of our community is informed, safe, and protected during these times.

In response to these unforeseen circumstances, we are diligently exploring alternative venues to ensure the Santa Cruz Cookout can proceed without compromising the health of our attendees. An announcement regarding the new venue location and the confirmed date will be made by Thursday evening, February 22. We are assessing all options, including the feasibility of hosting the event this coming weekend, while also preparing for the possibility of rescheduling if needed.

Our commitment to bringing the Santa Cruz community together in celebration of our collective culture, joy, and resilience remains unwavering. The Cookout is a testament to our shared values, and while this postponement is a setback, it does not deter our spirit. Instead, it reinforces our dedication to the well-being of each other and the strength of our community bonds.

I will provide an update to the community by tomorrow on the outcomes of our discussions with the city and the next steps for our beloved Cookout. In the meantime, I urge everyone to share this press release and communicate this update within your networks and communities as swiftly as possible.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
